Updates On Cucu, Rehomed Elderly Cat 26th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
My cousin, Lilian, asked for help in rehoming her domestic helper’s cat when the latter went back to the Philippines way back in August 2009. Lilian has 4 dogs and her helper looked after this cat, called Cucu. After the helper left, there was no one to look after Cucu anymore and Lilian wanted a better home for Cucu.
So, I blogged and around September 2009, we found a home for Cucu. Cucu was already at least 7 years old at that time. But being possibly of some breed (or cross-bred), there...

Pole News For The Day 26th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
This morning, Pole made no attempt at all to get up on the gutter-ledge. Has she already conceded defeat??
Instead, today’s mission is to “gazelle” over the cat-grille, to explore the rest of the house.
It looks like she only wanted to explore the rest of the house, so she went upstairs and downstairs, on a self-guided tour.
After about half an hour, she started calling (for help?) from the foyer. I carried her back into Bunny’s Room only to have her gazelle over the ...

Appeals And Requests From Rescuers 26th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Please be informed that when you write in to me (which means, to AnimalCare), your appeals and requests will be published verbatim. This is stated very clearly in our policies.
We hope you will not reveal the names of clinics, vets and individuals who might not like their identities to be made public. The same goes for locations as well. Please be discerning too, if you send photographs and if need be, kindly edit and crop the photographs if individuals’ photos and locations need to be kep...

A Bird Story 26th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Yesterday, a friend called me with an S.O.S. His friend had just rescued a bird (didn’t say which type) off the street and was looking for a vet to treat it. Unfortunately, the vets he went to could not treat the bird (this is true because most vets do not have the proper medication for treating birds). So this friend asked for advice. His friend also wanted to get an adopter for the bird, so I presume the bird can’t be the ordinary sparrow, mynah or crow.
I made a few phonecalls a...

Nandh ini has been updating me on the progress of this case.
Today, she checked with the Wildlife Department and apparently, the Deputy confirmed that his people have left for the restaurant now.
Nandhini will call back in the afternoon for updates. Hopefully, the Wildlife officers will rescue the poor alligator and release it back to its natural habitat in the wild.

Ref: http://myanimalcare.org/2011/11/07/alvin-sim on-theodore-kittens-for-adoption-nandhinis/
Nandhi ni just informed me that the three kittens have been adopted!
It’s taken more than 2 months, but it’s certainly been worth the time.
We wish the three “chipmunks” a great life in their new home.

The Pole Show, Prickly Cat-Mats And The Shadow Of Shadow 25th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
This morning, Pole’s in-built mechanism was at work, so she tries again…
She walks the entire length, looking for possible loopholes.
While our Houdini-Girl was doing her job, I had to do mine – yes, my janitor’s job of cleaning cat toilets.
Husband had put some prickly wires here yesterday. It seemed to work as a deterrent of sorts.
Would you believe she was up there for TWO hours, never giving up.
She even had a stand-off with Shadow, the ...

Come Play With Tabs! 25th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Tabs wasn’t feeling too well for the past 2 days. She looked a little tired. I think it could also be because some children came to visit and they played with her…a bit too much.
I gave her Vetri DMG and she is back to normal now.
These are the games Tabs plays with her elders.
A new paper bag, from a recent shopping trip.
A paper bag can be turned into a new game.
Take turns to enter the paper bag. First come, first served.
Tabs will find her way.
Ever since getting w...

Physiotherapy For Animals 25th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
We’ve had requests to learn physiotherapy for animals as we can see for ourselves how much good it has done for Sunshine.
Lydia has shared the below and wishes to emphasize that she does not hold any qualifications on physiotherapy for animals. What she knows is based on whatever skills she has picked up while in Bali (vets do not euthanise over there, they teach you how to nurse and take care of paralysed animals).
However, Lydia walks the extra mile by working with and consulting vets on...

An Angpow For Sunshine! 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
We’ve given an angpow from our Food Fund for Sunshine. Lydia did not want any “repayment” for all she has done for Sunshine, and we certainly cannot repay her with all the money in the world (!). This is just a small token to cover a bit of Sunshine’s food for a few weeks.
It’s from Sumitra, Sau Yee and the donors of AnimalCare.
Happy New Year, Sunshine!
Our wish for you is to continue improving day by day and we’ll work hard at looking for a good home for yo...

Sunshine Works Out On The Treadmill! 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Here are some sunshiny updates of our dear girl, Sunshine, from Lydia:
Sunshine has fully regained her bowel and bladder function and moves about independently. She walks, runs and plays with all my dogs. She even tries to jump up on me when she gets all excited when we’re playing. We are still working on some minor residual neurological deficits and I have hopes that this will still continue to improve.
Today I modified her indoor “bedroom/cage” again as she goes through ...

“Don’t Cat”? What Is That? 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Cathy told me all about “Don’t Cat”, available at Daiso at Sunway Pyramid (same floor as Harvey Norman’s).
She uses it to prevent her own cats from stepping into her cables and biting them.
So, what is “Don’t Cat”?
It’s quite an ingenious invention, really. It’s plastic studs that are sharp enough to discourage a cat from stepping into an area, but not sharp enough to hurt it.
Today, after Pole’s latest escape, I figured I’d have ...

Have You Heard Of Kopi Luwak? 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
My son, Jia-Wen, went for a holiday to Bali recently and came back with a most interesting story about Kopi Luwak.
He visited the factory and this is what he learnt:
There is this Asian Palm Civet called Luwak (local name) and its expertise is in detecting (and ingesting) the BEST coffee beans. These coffee beans are not digested but will pass through its intestines only to be excreted (defecated) as faeces-covered coffee beans.
The locals collect these faeces (I mean, the beans) and remove the ...

Updates On Flower And Coco (Anita Chen’s) 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Here’s updates on the two girls:
So far Flower has not vomited, only poo poo blood clot once in 24 hours and protested like crazy when her lining paper was wet. But she pulled out the drip so it had to be removed. We can’t put into other legs because the vein burt. So, no drip today. Will let her rest, force feed her water and chicken essence to get her strength up. Vet says if she can survive 5 days, she will probably make it. Today is the 5th day.
Coco is much better now, wound has...

Medical Subsidy For A Cat With Mange (Shaila Raj’s) 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Shaila Raj wrote to me a few days regarding a stray cat with mange. Since this was Shaila’s first case of dealing with a mangy cat, she was quite disturbed by all the scratching and bleeding and wanted to board the cat at the vet’s. I explained that our policies will not cover any subsidy for boarding for such a case unless the boarding is justified necessary by the vet.
I also shared with Shaila a few of our mange cases, the worst being that of Zhou2, who recovered beautifully in ju...

The Pole Escapades (mystery Solved And Rectified…for Now) 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Husband found two holes up on the gutter ledge. He is amazed how Pole discovered it, too.
Let’s call them the “Pole Holes”.
Yups, there are actually TWO holes which even Cow could get out from!
Gee… can you fix them?
You’re wasting you time, you know. I’ll just find another way, somehow.
Meanwhile, who is outside on our front lawn?
Mr Gorilla still thinks our lawn is his territory.
For the past few days, he’s been (no eye witness accoun...

The Classic “Chicken Or Egg” Question Answered!! 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Yesterday, I chanced upon a few minutes of a TV programme about the myths and legends surrounding the first 15 days of Chinese Year Year and why the 7th day is known as “everybody’s birthday.
I googled and found this: http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/Chine se_Customs/chinese-new-year-festivities.htm
An excerpt:
According to Chinese legends, Nüwa (Traditional Chinese: 女媧; Simplified Chinese: 女娲; Pinyin: nǚwā) is the goddess who created the world. Two legends refer to ...

The Pole Escapades Continues… 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Pole’s in-built mechanism got to work again this morning.
After breakfast and a big clean-up, she jumped onto the gutter ledge to try her luck. One could see in her eyes that she was bent on escaping again.
Previously, there was a gap here, but it’s been sealed off by Ah Keong, the contractor.
Everybody loves the Pole Escapade Shows. Otherwise, life at Bunny’s Place can be pretty boring.
Pole walks the length of the gutter ledge and tries every possible loophole.
Th...
