A Chat With An MPSJ Councilor
7th Oct 2012, by AnimalCare

At the SS19/1 Community Carnival today, I had a good chat with Mr Rajiv Rishyakaran, a councilor for MPSJ. We had already spoken about 2 years ago when I first asked if MPSJ would be able to spare ear-notched (neutered) animals. At that time, Mr Rajiv explained that complaints about stray animals were one of the top five complaints every day at MPSJ and it was the responsibility of the local council to attend to such matters. Unfortunately, the long-standing method employed by the authorities i...

The SS19/1 Community Carnival
7th Oct 2012, by AnimalCare

I’ve lived in SS19/1 for 23 years and it is always nice to get back there and meet up with old friends. Today was the SS19/1 Community Carnival and we were invited by the committee to open a booth.  CP, Mary and I set up the booth at about 8.15am. Most of the booths were already up by then. Guess we are all earlybirds! As luck would have it, we managed to shift to the sitting area and so, we had a whole tent to ourselves.    This is Mr Rajiv, a councilor in the MPSJ. We discuss...

Brainstorming For Solutions To Halt The Dog-Hunts
6th Oct 2012, by AnimalCare

This is from one of our readers who has requested anonymity. I believe all of us who feel that street dogs in our country ought to be treated with more respect and given a chance to live on would want to do something constructively towards this end. Shall we brainstorm on how this can be done? Here are some thoughts from this reader (reference to Mdm Hoo’s Kajang dogs): I remember in 2010 Noah Ark mobile vets unit made a trip to Bentong, Pahang to do a mass neutering for dogs at the sanctu...

Updates On Mdm Hoo And Her Dogs
6th Oct 2012, by AnimalCare

Ref: http://myanimalcare.org/2012/10/05/mdm-hoo-y uh-ru-and-her-dogs-come-under-our-food-fund/ After I published the above post at midnight last night, by early this morning, a reader and friend, PC Leong had already responded. This was followed by Wani from MDDB, and later, Peggy Tiong, all pledging to help by topping up the balance of the neutering bills from our RM100 subsidy per dog. Mdm Hoo’s vet’s rates is between RM150 – Rm180 but I have sourced for a vet who is willing...

Here We Go Again…
6th Oct 2012, by AnimalCare

I’ve been dealing with applicants who cannot fill up details correctly in our subsidy claim forms, like, dog or cat, male or female.  I also have those who write a wrong bank account number, or do not circle the name of their bank. And of course, those who do not answer the question whether they are also claiming from other organisations. We’ve talked about this and we’ve already changed our form to make it as simple as possible to minimise difficulties faced when filling it u...

Massive Dog-Catching Projects Going On (please Protect Your Community Dogs)
6th Oct 2012, by AnimalCare

A reader has written to me privately to inform me that many of the stray dogs that she and her friends feed in a certain part of the Klang Valley have “disappeared”. Apparently, private dog-catching companies have been employed to capture dogs on a massive scale, not only in the Klang Valley but in Pahang as well. Soon, it might be endemic in the whole country. For those of you who are feeding and looking after community dogs, please be forewarned and do the needful to protect your d...

We STILL Like Monge!!
6th Oct 2012, by AnimalCare

Well, it’s been a whole week now and it looks like my brood is still going all gaga over the new food, Monge. I don’t give it to them every day (to keep the novelty), though. This morning, I decided it will be Monge for breakfast and what do you know, the moment Tiger saw me holding the cans, he started mewing, which is a rare thing…. Everyone got really excited when they saw the cans. We can’t wait! It’s Monge today…yay!! Yes, everyone was SO excited, I had...

Mdm Hoo Yuh Ru And Her Dogs Come Under Our Food Fund
5th Oct 2012, by AnimalCare

As you all know, most of our funds are used for neutering and medical claims (our Medical Fund). We started with that, and it was only much later that we were able to channel some funds over to provide petfood for very needy rescuers (our Food Fund). Unlike our medical subsidies where we help as many rescuers and caregivers as possible, we cannot help many caregivers with our Food Fund because we don’t have that much to spare! Currently, those who come under our Food Fund are Meiji Lee, Pa...

Recycling Old Catfood Cans
5th Oct 2012, by AnimalCare

Here is an idea from Chen: Hi KY! Here is an idea that you can blog about – what do you do with the used cans leftover from can cat food? Many of these cans are made of good aluminium. My favourite is Natural Balance cans. They never rust, light weight and just the right size of small household uses. I’m no handicraft person, so I could not be bothered to re-decorate or re-paint the cans, but for more crafty people, they’ll make great crafted objects (this I let other people to...

More On Pet Aggression
5th Oct 2012, by AnimalCare

Ref: http://myanimalcare.org/2012/10/05/petting-a ggression-and-play-aggression-in-cats/ Here is a sharing by Chen from her book: It suggests that we ignore the biting (ie. pay no attention to it) as the biting is attention-seeking. Must try that on our Cow! Hey, come to think of it, isn’t that Tiger’s way? He ignores Bunny’s war-cries and he never gets hurt. Smart Tiger….! Just an hour ago, Bunny was intimidating Tiger with his most terrifying war-cries. Tiger didnR...

A (re)look At Pet Euthanasia
5th Oct 2012, by AnimalCare

Pet euthanasia has always been a controversial topic. Our stand has always been that we do not see it as right or wrong, but rather, as a choice or option. The human gives the order – it’s his/her choice. Our choice is that we would avoid it at all costs. We would opt for palliative care and use pain-killers, if need be, and allow the animal to pass on naturally. This is an alternative to euthanasia. So, we do have a choice. This is the reason we do not subsidise euthanasia in our me...

Something About Clay Cat-Litter
5th Oct 2012, by AnimalCare

For cat owners, you may wish to read this: http://www.care2.com/causes/whats-the-scoop -about-clay-cat-litter.html An excerpt: “Clumping litter is designed to form a hard, insoluble mass when it gets wet,” Marina explains. “It also produces a fine dust when stirred (as when a cat scratches around to bury a recent deposit). And these clumping litters absorb many times their weight in fluids. When cats or kittens use the litter box, they lick themselves clean; anything their tongues encount...

Petting Aggression And Play Aggression In Cats
5th Oct 2012, by AnimalCare

Today, a student, Jason, from my college who had previously rescued and adopted a stray kitten (now a very precious pet) stopped by my class to chat. He had something to ask about his cat, RayRay. http://myanimalcare.org/2011/05/16/injured -kitten-found-in-the-middle-of-the-road-sent-for-t reatment/ He says that RayRay likes to bite him, and he means, biting until it bleeds. So we got talking and I think what RayRay has may be similar to what Cow has, ie. a condition called “Petting Aggres...
