Visiting Nomi (Day 3) 9th May 2024, by AnimalCare
Today, Nicholas visited Nomi and I too went a bit later.
Early this morning, the vet had already updated us about Nomi.
Nomi has been alert and stable so far. Breathing still slightly laboured, will be doing another chest X-Ray again to assess her condition. She ate well. The small pocket of aid is normal post-op, and is being monitored if there are more. Since the lung had collapsed as a result of the injury, time is needed for the lung to re-expand. When it does, there is a chance the aid pock...

Misty Spent The Night! 9th May 2024, by AnimalCare
Last night, after the thunderstorm, Misty came back to the porch.
Even the during the thunderstorm, we opened the door, but she wasn’t around. I think Misty has a bomb shelter somewhere, because she is never wet when she comes back from a storm, no matter how heavy it is.
So, we let her into the house and she quite happily came in, no more cautious or annoyed at me for closing the door after she enters.
From the house, she entered Bunny’s Place and thereafter, the strangest thing hap...

Raw Food, Anyone? 8th May 2024, by AnimalCare
As you know, Riley is so, so difficult to feed (raw food). She’s a junkie.
So, I’ve been handfeeding her raw food twice a day for many months now. Yes, every single day.
By handfeeding, it means I actually put the food into her mouth and she swallows it. It’s more like force-feeding but no force is needed because she voluntarily swallows the food. She just won’t eat it herself.
If it’s kibble or canned food, she would eat it herself. But only in small quantities. Ri...

Nomi’s Updates This Evening 8th May 2024, by AnimalCare
This is the latest update from the vet:
Nomi’s chest X-Ray today is fine as well; only a small pocket of air in the pleural cavity was detected, this is expected in this kind of surgery. It will be monitored tomorrow and if need be, another X-Ray will be taken.
Nomi’s PCV today is 30%, which is okay; she is not anaemic. So far she is doing fairly well, eating well, there has been no transfusion reactions like fever, tachycardia or jaundice. But it is also best to monitor closely over...

Indra’s Loose Stools Update 8th May 2024, by AnimalCare
We still have not resolved Indra’s loose stools problem.
But demeanour-wise, she is as active as ever. Here, she is doing battle with Robin.
Her appetite is also very good. So going by my raw-feeding friend’s long-time advice, “they are just detoxing, leave them alone”. That is what he said about Indy last time and I went overboard with tests and various treatments. But he did say as long as there is no fever, it’s fine.
Indra had a fever that day, so the Metrogyl ...

Misty’s Visit And Orientation 8th May 2024, by AnimalCare
Misty invited herself into the house today!
My ultimate aim is for Misty to want to come and live inside the house on her own. Right now, her best friend is still Gerald and Gerald doesn’t want to live indoors.
In fact, this morning, at 1.30am, Gerald was whining from the back row of houses. It was his nonstop whining. His whining woke me up but I was simply too tired to come down to feed him. Moreover, he wasn’t here, he was at the back road. I did hear Misty mewing softly, as thoug...

Nomi’s Surgery – Some Details 7th May 2024, by AnimalCare
Here are some details on Nomi’s surgery:
The diaphragm was torn in three places, so it was a very bad tear. There was adhesion of the liver to the right lung. The vet had to cut the sternum to fix this. In separating the organs, there was bleeding, as expected. Nomi needed emergency blood transfusion and this was not anticipated so the team had to give blood immediately and there was no time to cross-match the blood. Thankfully no incompatibility issue has arisen from this so far.
Due to t...

Nomi’s Surgery – A Success! 7th May 2024, by AnimalCare
Nomi’s surgery ended just a few minutes ago.
It was a successful surgery.
She is still under sedation with oxygen now, is still unstable and would need monitoring for another 24 hours.
She is not out of the woods yet as this was a very high risk and complicated surgery, so we still need everyone to please send positive and healing thoughts for Nomi to recover.
Our heartfelt gratitude to go our vet who performed a surgery many vets do not do.
Thank you so, so much, Dr.
We are all rooting f...

Indra’s Loose Stools Updates 7th May 2024, by AnimalCare
Yesterday I had already started Indra on raw rabbit. I force fed her about a teaspoon since she will not eat it on her own.
This morning, I found a bit of loose stools, but not as much as in previous days.
This is her favourite spot now. But she’s here this morning when I tried to feed her her medicine.
I’m not going to risk falling on the ladder to catch her, so I waited.
“Mum will protect me from you”, she says.
It did not take long for her to come down on her own.
T...

Misty Invites Herself Into The House! 7th May 2024, by AnimalCare
If one day Misty is happy to live in the Safehouse with Tabs and Riley, that would be good, but for now, she still wants to be free.
This morning, Misty invited herself into the house.
Eating here.
But right after eating, she wanted to go out.
Okay, Misty. I respect your wishes.
Gerald came to eat later. And Misty ate again with Gerald!

All Our Best Wishes And Healing Thoughts For Nomi 7th May 2024, by AnimalCare
Dear Friends,
Nomi’s surgery to repair her diaphragmatic hernia is this afternoon.
It is a very high risk surgery and the chances of success is 50-50. But without the surgery, she would have breathing difficulty which will just deteriorate and she would endure much suffering. We have checked with several vets and surgery is the only option to save her life.
Please think of Nomi for the next few hours and wish her well. It is expected to be a long surgery because it has been two weeks...

Keeping Fit And Healthy….for Our Animals 6th May 2024, by AnimalCare
Allow me to digress a little from our usual stories about animals and talk about fitness and health, because as caregivers, we really need to be as fit and as healthy as we can in order to look after our animals.
This is about my mother, who turned 91 today!
On 1st May 2024, just 6 days ago, she had a fall in the bathroom. We rushed her to emergency and the doctor ordered brain and cervical CT scans and X-Rays of her affected leg. Her face had a bruise too. But she was in good spirits.
I was wor...

Indra’s Loose Stools 6th May 2024, by AnimalCare
Indra’s stools are still pasty.
I think she must have known that I want to monitor her stools so she did it for me to see to save me the trouble to sifting through hours of CCTV footage!
I pounded the Pro-Fibre (which the vet affectionately calls “rabbit food” because it looks like that!) and encapsulated the powder.
Also, I made a serendipitous mistake by buying Size 1 empty capsules. I don’t know if the packet was wrongly labelled, but there are 3 sizes (Size 0 being t...

Gerald And Misty’s Breakfast 6th May 2024, by AnimalCare
Breakfast at 5am this morning.
Misty only came in when Gerald did, but the moment I closed the door ever so softly, she stopped eating and headed for the door.
“I’m not going to be trapped again!”, she said.
So ok, not trapping anyone. Eat.

Down Memory Lane With Puffin And Remirth 6th May 2024, by AnimalCare
People are often so surprised when they hear I used to have dogs.
“YOU had dogs??”
Well yes, I grew up with dogs since I was 8 years old. My mother didn’t like cats (my father did!), so we never had cats at all. We had dogs, chickens, ducklings, rabbits and geese, all as pets. And we could because we lived in government quarters and there was space.
So here’s going down memory lane, rewinding back to 1971 when I was 8 years old.
This is me, in a rare occasion where I cli...
