Even amongst themselves, adult males live in solitude until they mind female orangutans who are ready to mate. Today is World Orangutan Day! Orangutan can be translated to ‘person of the forest’ in Malay and Indonesian. They’re the only great apes of Asia and the remaining living ones can only be found in Borneo and Sumatra, where untouched rainforests still remain 🌳🌳.

The largest land mammal on earth is actually the African elephant. The elephants found in Malaysia are Asian elephants, which are smaller in size and have smaller ears.
🐘 Asian elephants are listed in the IUCN Red List as ENDANGERED to CRITICALLY ENDANGERED! There is an estimate of 1000-1500 Malaysian elephants left in the Peninsular Malaysia.

August 12 is a day for big ideas about big animals. World Elephant Day stomped onto the scene in 2012 as a way to raise awareness about conservation efforts for Asian and African elephants.
Anthropologist Jane Goodall, known for her work with chimpanzees, is using this day to call on the government of Canada to ban the country's legal trade in elephant ivory.
