Malaysia hosts 4 species of marine turtles on its shores - the Green, the Olive Ridley, the Hawksbill, and the Leatherback. Unfortunately the Green and Olive Ridley turtles are now classified as ‘endangered’ and the Hawksbill and Leatherback turtles are ‘critically endangered’. While there has been laws passed recently banning the sale of turtle eggs, more can be done to save our turtles

Malaysias Biodiversity Ranks Amongst The Highest I..

Malaysia’s biodiversity ranks amongst the highest in the world. But sadly, we have begun to lose many species in the wild. Just last year we saw the extinction of the Sumatran Rhinoceros. Out of 313 mammal species, 6 are critically endangered and 17 are endangered. Malaysia also has 686 endangered plant species including pitcher plants.

Sun bears play a vital ecological role in our jungles as seed dispersers, forest engineers, forest doctors and forest farmers.
They feast on, and therefore, control the termite population which protects the forest trees. In the process of eating stingless bees, they carve holes in trees that hornbills and flying squirrels use as nests. And when they feed on earthworms, they plough the soil, making it easier for new trees to grow.

Including species that are part of national identity like the Malayan Tiger, the Bornean Orangutan, and the Hawksbill Turtle. Malaysia has already lost the Leatherback Turtle and the Sumatran Rhino. So let’s focus on what we can do to help our wildlife.

Dr Jane Goodall visited Universiti Sains Malaysia last year to give her first public lecture in the north of Malaysia. She was greeted with the warmest of receptions from the staff and students of USM and had buses of school students coming in for her lecture. She still has many fond memories of her time in Penang.
