Painted Terrapins And River Terrapins Are Differen..
18th Sep 2023, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia

Painted terrapins and river terrapins are different species found in the same rivers, but what’s the difference? One of the key differences between painted terrapins and river terrapins is their nesting location. While they live in the same rivers and both nest on the sandbanks of rivers, painted terrapins also nest on beaches. Upon hatching, the hatchlings migrate from saltwater back to the fresh water of the river. As the population of painted terrapins is dwindling, it is essential that we...

This year, the camp is sponsored by Deleum Sdn Bhd 🥳 A total of 60 students had the opportunity to learn about different types of turtles and the threats they face. On the other hand, sea turtles exclusively live in the salt water of the ocean. Other key differences between these creatures lie in their body plans. Terrapins have flattened feet, similar to a duck’s feet, ...

Painted Terrapins Are Targets Of Poaching, As Thei..
8th Sep 2023, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia

Painted terrapins are targets of poaching, as their striking colours makes them desirable as pets. This causes the wild population to decline, and improper care of the terrapins in captivity may lead to their premature deaths. Now, painted terrapins are a protected species in Malaysia, making it illegal to sell them, but they are still under threat. As the population of painted terrapins is dwindling, it is essential that we protect them. Together with @coffeebeanmy, we are holding the Save Ter...

Fishing Nets Are A Hazard To Painted Terrapins, As..
5th Sep 2023, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia

Fishing nets are a hazard to painted terrapins, as they can get trapped in them, unable to surface. As terrapins breathe with lungs, they need to surface in order to obtain oxygen. Once a terrapin is trapped in a fishing net, if not quickly rescued, it will eventually drown. As the population of painted terrapins is dwindling, it is essential that we protect them. Together with @coffeebeanmy, we are holding the Save Terry Campaign to help achieve this goal. For every purchase of Terry merchandi...

28th Aug 2023, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia

Among the dangers faced by painted terrapins is sand mining, in which sand is harvested from riverbanks for the construction of new roads and buildings. These sandbanks serve as the nesting site for not only painted terrapins, but river terrapins as well. As a result, these species are left without a place to lay their eggs during nesting season when the sandbanks are destroyed by sand mining. As the population of painted terrapins is dwindling, it is essential that we protect them. Together wi...
