English Caption Below. Awal Pagi Tadi, Seekor Tunt.. 6th Feb 2024, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
(English caption below.)

The Nesting Season Had Barely Started, And We're F.. 25th Jan 2024, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
The nesting season had barely started, and we're flooded again! π
It took only 2 days of rain to raise the water level so significantly. Our Terrapin Guardians had just erected 3 camp sites recently, and now they have to dismantle and retrieve whatever they can to minimise our losses. Canvas sheets, boats, engines.
Our nightly patrols are now restricted to the one nesting bank that is still visible. The other nesting banks are completely submerged.
We're thankful for the Terrapin Guardian...

The Female Terrapin That Emerged Last Night Was A .. 23rd Jan 2024, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
The female terrapin that emerged last night was a returnee! πͺπ»
She was first microchipped in 2012, after depositing 31 eggs. Then she returned in 2015 to lay 13 eggs. In 2024, she returned to lay 20 eggs (so far, there could be more).
The microchips that we implant in the terrapins allow us to determine their nesting history, i.e. nesting year, frequency and productivity. In the long-term (like in this conservation project that has been running since 2012), it allows us to estimate the s...

Another Camp Site Erected. Last Friday, We Have Er.. 22nd Jan 2024, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
Another camp site erected! ππ»
Last Friday, we have erected a new camp site on one of the terrapin nesting banks. This is a smaller nesting bank and will be guarded by two Terrapin Guardians, Pok Nasir and Rizal.
The camp site allows them to hang out and rest in between patrol rounds, and also provides a space for them to process the post-nesting females.
Can you tell we're all excited about this upcoming nesting season? π’

Guess Who Emerged Last Night?. The First Female Ri.. 16th Jan 2024, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
Guess who emerged last night?
The first female river terrapin emerged late last night (15th Jan) to deposit a nest containing 8 eggs! She didn't have an existing microchip, so we assigned her a new chip. We swiftly measured and weighed her (she weighed more than 25 kg!) before releasing it back into the river.
This event officially marks the beginning of the 2024 terrapin nesting season! π Our Terrapin Guardians will be patrolling 4 nesting banks this season. Hopefully we're able to secure ...

Yesterday Was A Busy Day For The Team Despite It B.. 13th Jan 2024, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
Yesterday was a busy day for the team despite it being our weekend πͺπ»
Right after sembahyang Jumaat, our Terrapin Guardians split into two smaller teams and spent many hours on two nesting banks to prepare for the upcoming nesting season.
We cleared some bushes to make way for a campsite, erected our camps, and ensured that the team would be shielded completely from nesting female terrapins during the night.
Our Terrapin Guardians will be spending many nights in these camp sites (roughl...

Every Month In 2023, We'd Either Encountered Wild .. 8th Jan 2024, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
Every month in 2023, either we encountered wild turtles on the road or received calls from the locals if they find any that needs our help.
One time, a local surrendered a softshell turtle and after inspection, it is healthy and good to go ππ»
The softshell turtle weighs 12kg. With the help of one of our Terrapin Guardian, we released it back into its own habitat.

Final River Survey Of 2023. It Has Been Raining In.. 31st Dec 2023, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
Final river survey of 2023! π
It has been raining in Kemaman for more than 10 days, and many river banks are flooded (as evidenced by the colour of the grass in the first picture).
Yesterday, as soon as we had a pocket of good weather, our Terrapin Guardians went out to the river for a quick survey.
As expected, all the river banks that are frequented by terrapins were submerged. The team also removed a HUGEEE discarded fishing gear to prevent it from interfering with the upstream movement...

The Box Turtle That We Rescued From The Roadside M.. 27th Dec 2023, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
The box turtle that we rescued from the roadside mid-November has passed away despite our effort to give it the best possible care π
We drove the turtle to Kuala Terengganu where our former intern, Dr. Lim Wei Li is currently attached to.
Due to the damage to the turtle's beak, a feeding tube was inserted to facilitate feeding of meds and feeds. Metal pins were placed to support the fractured beak.
A week later, Dr. Lim noticed that the box turtle kept gaining weight (indicative that feed ...
