It's Just A Straw.". Did You Know That Malaysians .. 20th Aug 2021, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
"It's just a straw."
Did you know that Malaysians use approximately 31 million plastic straws each day?
Plastic is one of the world's most persistent pollutants. It's designed to survive a long time, often up to 400 years. Plastic emits greenhouse gases at every stage of its lifecycle, even after it has been discarded, contributing to global warming.
The IPCC estimates that the world reaches 1.5°C between 2021 and 2040 (with a central estimate of early 2030s), which is very worrying!
Thus,...

What Are Barnacles?. Barnacles Are Invertebrate An.. 1st Aug 2021, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
What are barnacles?
Barnacles are invertebrate animals with exoskeletons. They are also known as crustaceans, similar to crabs and lobsters.
You may have seen barnacles attached to turtle shells before, but have you ever wondered why and how they attach to them?
Well, for one thing, barnacles cannot live on their own in water; they need a hard surface to thrive, and a turtle's shell is one example of a hard surface. Barnacles also require a constant flow of water; thus, they will settle on an...

One Of Most Frequently Asked Questions During Our .. 30th Jul 2021, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
One of most frequently asked questions during our virtual tour is, "Why do you microchip the terrapins, and does it hurt?"
We insert a microchip the size of a grain of Basmathi rice into the body cavity of the river terrapins for individual identification. We are unable to tell the terrapins apart just by looking at the physical characteristics. Moreover, we produce at least 200 hatchlings per year.
We do not know for sure whether it hurts, but we're confident that we're able to prevent prolon...

What Is The Life Span Of A Turtle?. Turtles In Gen.. 27th Jul 2021, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
What is the life span of a turtle?
Turtles in general have a long life span, and it varies greatly depending on the species of turtle.
For example, a typical pet turtle can live between 20 and 30 years or so, while larger species such as freshwater turtles and sea turtles typically live longer.
That being said, it's difficult to know exactly how long sea turtles can live because they often outlive most research projects. It is hard to accurately measure their life span over this long period ...
