This evening, we'll continue with the most recognisable freshwater #turtle, the Malayan Box Turtle (Cuora amboinensis). They are often seen trying to cross the roads (to get to the other side!), which sometimes ends in tragedy 😢
They are typically found in rice fields, marshes and shallow ponds due to their preference of still water. This species easily recognized by their olive to dark olive-colored head with three yellow stripes on either side.

No prizes for guessing what the Malayan Snail-eating Turtle (Malayemys macrocephala) mainly feasts on! This small aquatic #turtle has a large head (macro = big, cephala = head) and strong jaws, which enables it to crush the shells of snails. On occasion, it also eats mussels, crabs, shrimp, and insects.
It is found in slow-moving bodies of water with muddy bottoms and lots of vegetation, such as marshes, swamps, rice paddies and irrigation canals. Females are much larger than males.

Today, we have a special freshwater #turtle named for its unique flat-top shell.
The Malayan Flat-shelled Turtle (Notochelys platynota) is not easily confused with other turtles, despite the fact that they don't have any fancy colour or pattern. Special-looking guy, right?
It is one of a few turtle species in the world to have more than five vertebral scutes, typically having six or seven. The vertebral scutes are the central row of shell plates running along the center of the back.

And the sixth #turtle species is the Yellow-headed Temple Turtle (Heosemys annandalii). The species name, annandalii, is in honor of Scottish herpetologist Nelson Annandale. It is found in Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and possibly Myanmar.

Next up is the Painted Terrapin (Batagur borneoensis).
This #turtle is closely related to the river terrapin, but they lay their eggs and make their nests on coastal beaches, unlike the river terrapin which lays eggs on riverbanks.
In the mating season, which is from January to June, heads of males turn white with a bright red stripe between the eyes, and the usually brown shell lightens with three thick, black stripes running down the shell, making them very attractive to females!
