Labour Day Was Spent Performing A Health Assessmen.. 2nd May 2023, by Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
Labour Day was spent performing a health assessment on our captive-raised terrapins 💪🏻
With assistance from our foreign volunteers, we were able to check the health conditions of 20 terrapins. We recorded their microchip numbers, their body weight and measurements, and gave them a head-to-toe health check, including their mouth cavity and cloaca.
By performing a health assessment, we are able to confirm that they're in good health and ready for release in October.

Next up, is a special group of turtles, i.e. the softshell turtles!

First, we have the Narrow-headed Softshell Turtle (Chitra chitra), that grows to over 1.2 metres in length and weighs up to 254 kilograms!

We have more! This time, we have the cute Asian Leaf Turtle (Cyclemys dentata). The shape of their carapace is quite flat and leaf-like 🍂, so they blend into the background easily. Plus, they are quite shy! 😳
This terrapin inhabits clear streams and small rivers in the lowlands and hills. Although they spend a lot of time in the water, they couldn't swim very well. So they walk on the bottom of the rivers and streams, hunting for food furing the day and coming to the land to sleep.

It is one of a few turtle species in the world to have more than five vertebral scutes, typically having six or seven. The vertebral scutes are the central row of shell plates running along the center of the back.
