Last Friday, we were joined by a family of eight for one of our #TurtleTrips — a painted terrapin release! We gave them an introductory talk on terrapins, sea turtles and tortoises, and they had the chance to look at our specimens on display. Then, we went to the river to release six baby painted terrapins.

Pada hari Rabu lepas, semasa Geng Tuntung sedang membantu mencari mangsa tragedi kepala air Air Putih, mereka menemui seekor tuntung sungai di bawah cabang-cabang pokok.
Tuntung sungai betina tersebut tidak boleh menyelam dan kelihatan tidak bermaya. Geng Tuntung membawa balik tuntung tersebut dan memberikan ia buah pisang, tetapi tidak dimakan.

We are shocked and saddened by the water surge tragedy that took the lives of 10 family members in Air Putih last week.
Following a torrential rain on Saturday, our Terrapin Guardians went to the river to check out our boat that was tethered to the riverbank the night before.

Many people have not seen turtles, hence they do not know much about them. They only knew about sea turtles (but there are so many other non-sea turtles!). They believed that turtles could come out of their shells, like how it is depicted in cartoons.

The Southern River Terrapins (Batagur affinis) are critically endangered due to the chronic consumption of their eggs, mortality from fishing gear and habitat destruction.
Together with the local communities, we established a few anti-poaching teams to protect the female terrapins and the eggs that they produce during the nesting season.

Last month, we were invited to the NGO Fair & Charity Bazaar at Sunway University.
We had a good time engaging with students and staffs, raising awareness about all turtle species in Malaysia, and how they (+ you!) can help in saving the turtles 🌟
We also brought our exclusive turtle batik merchandise, 100% handmade by the local ladies in Kg. Pasir Gajah, Kemaman, Terengganu. All the proceeds go to supporting them and for our turtle conservation efforts 🐢
