If you are interested in developing a small team of volunteers to help raise awareness and raise much needed money for Soi Dog please get in touch with me Debbie Mole at debbie@soidog.org. I am working with Candace Cornock who will soon be Ziti's new mom.

A NEW YEAR A NEW LIFE. Today is Songkran. (Thai New Year).
No more fitting day for Cassie, who was one of the dogs rescued from the Dog Meat Traders en route to Vietnam, to commence another journey, only this time to a loving new home in Canada, where new mum Rebeccah will meet her at Toronto airport tomorrow afternoon local time. Here she is just about to levee the shelter.

Maxine Is Safe

MAXINE MEETS HER PHOTOGRAPHER!... Maxine became the symbol of the Bangkok Floods. After being swept away in the flood waters & presumed drowned.
It surprised us all when Maxine was found alive a few weeks ago & we flew her to Soi Dog in Phuket. It was not until this week that Maxine & her photographer (Cindy) met in person & took a walk together. A very happy ending for a very famous dog!

Happy Songkran From All At Soi Dog!
Songkran is the Thai New Year celebrated with the throwing of water. People roam the streets with containers of water or water guns (sometimes mixed with mentholated talc), or post themselves at the side of roads with a garden hose and drench each other and passersby. Also Songkran is traditionally a time to visit and pay respects to elders, including family members, friends, neighbors, and monks.

Big Quake Strikes Off Coast Of Indonesia - CNN.com

For those who missed early news today, there was an earthquake in Indonesia that triggered an evacuation order for Phuket west coast and where is based the shelter.
Luckily the tsunami evacuation was lifted hours later. Here below is Soi Dog Manager Reggie reporting latest news this afternoon.

INDONESIA EARTHQUAKE UPDATE
3:00 AM Thailand Time:
Current situation report by Soi Dog Shelter's Manager Reggie:
"Thank you to all of our supporters for your concern, no tsunami came.
We could feel the after shocks here at the shelter and some people felt the actual earthquake. The Phuket autorithies evacuated the people around the beaches but nothing happened" Loudspeakers and other emergency actions learned in the past helped to alert people on what to do in advance.

KANGAROO GETS A VISIT FROM HIS AUSTRALIAN SPONSORS!... Many people visit Soi Dog, but none find it more rewarding than those who get to meet their sponsor dog in person!
Joanna & Kevin flew all the way from Perth, Australia to meet their sponsor dog "Kangaroo" who's one of our longer serving residents & has one eye missing. He's a playful dog & loves it when volunteers come to visit. Joanna & Kevin took Kanagaroo & his friend "Tamarind" for a walk around the shelter grounds, stopping for treats...

CHA CHA - A LOVELY OLD GIRL LOOKING FOR SPONSORS...

CHA CHA - A LOVELY OLD GIRL.. Cha Cha is one of our elderly residents at approx 13 years old who's been a street dog all her life. She was found in 2011 at a fresh market in a frightened state as she's been hit by a car & had a broken leg. She can no longer look after herself, so we've given her a home here at Soi Dog. She's a quiet girl who loves to sleep all day. She's now safe & in Soi Dog's care, living in our Old Age Dog Run, with some new friends her own age.

Shiver Puppy Club

Another example of the Shiver puppy care club in action. This puppy came to SDF from Kao Lak 9 weeks ago with severe hairloss covered in fleas and lice but worst of all testing positive to distemper.

In this instance we have no idea what happened. Could have been an accident could have been deliberate. Incredible that the body can survive injuries like this as must have been massive blood loss.
Surgery and after care will cost in region of U$150, cheap by Western standards of course but dog cannot return to streets so will stay with us for life. Another reason why our sponsorship program is so important.
Should be fine but will probably have to have leg amputated as otherwise will try and ...

TVT tumors are extremely common in both male and female dogs. Untreated they lead to a slow and painful death. Takes around 6 weeks of chemo therapy and this tumor will have disappeared. Please consider donating to help SDF to treat dozens of dogs like this every year
