An Update On The Illegal Dog Meat Trade, Laos

Soi Dog agents last week toured all the border crossings between Laos and Vietnam. The main crossing used for dogs is on Laos highway 8. The guards there said they had had no dogs cross since late April and all dogs were accompanied by Thai export licenses.
The guards were unable to show these licenses and stated were destroyed after 3 months. The Thai Department of Livestock state that no export licenses have been issued (they do not approve licenses for the export of dogs) but of course canno...

BRIGITTE LOSES BATTLE
We are very sad to report that Brigitte, despite the best efforts of our vets, passed away late yesterday afternoon.
When she arrived we were confident we could save her as we see far worse cases than this such as Hero, but her refusal to eat indicated, as reported yesterday, that she had lost the will to live. Intravenous fluids and supplements and appetite stimulants were simply not enough.

Do you remember Silley? Silley came to the shelter in a terrible state back in April 2012. He was found on the streets of Karon in Phuket with a severe maggot infested neck wound which needed urgent treatment to ease his pain. It was evident that Silley had not eating for a long time as he was underweight and suffering from malnutrition when he arrived. He underwent rigorous and lengthy treatment but throughout it all, he was brave and never complained.

No sooner had the new Brigitte Bardot sterilization clinic opened than another poor dog arrived at the shelter so of course we have named her Brigitte. She is nearly blind and has been for some years, but this has never held her back, and she is one of the most loving, gentle and affectionate dogs.

5:00 AM at Thailand’s Phuket Airport, same characters but a bit different situation. In the first photo Cristy clung to Gill in fear when she arrived at Soi Dog, very near death. For weeks we did not know if she would survive.

This is Taa Reua, just one of the hundreds of dogs rescued by Soi Dog Foundation. Found with a rope around her neck that was left on 24 hours per day, so tight it buried into her skin causing a two inch wide deep wound that was filled with maggots. The second photo is Taa Reua today.
