The Sequel On ‘China’ The Goose
23rd Jul 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

We followed through with our plans with ‘China’. He was admitted for full workup and I got great information from Dr. Colin (from Melbourne bird clinic) and he confirmed the diagnosis of bumblefoot based on the pictures I emailed him. I took lots of footage but will not bore you with all of it. I will just give you a brief rundown on what we did. First we gave ‘China’ a premedication which includes sedation & pain relief properties. This was followed by a gas down...

Musk Lorikeet – Australian Parrot
22nd Jul 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

The hardest part of my job as a vet is accepting euthanasia as a viable option for a healthy animal that an owner no longer wants. It does not get easier when it is a geriatric pet in excellent shape that has a manageable condition like arthritis. I unfortunately have not been able to save everything because physically I could simply not. But all those times i had to be passive when multiple kittens were being put down, I lost a little piece of my heart. I felt like an accomplice in a crime I de...

Super Bruno
21st Jul 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

Meet Bruno, the friendliest Maremma I have ever met. He is living proof that any breed of dog is capable of being well socialised! This champ is one of my fave patients. He loves coming into the vet clinic and is usually busting with excitement to see everyone especially me because I have brain washed him with heaps of liver treats. About a month and a half ago, I was called out afterhours to examine him as he was just hit by a car. His poor dad witnessed the whole thing. They brought him stra...

Flourescent Corneal Ulcer In Canine
21st Jul 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

flourescent corneal ulcer in canine, a photo by Rayya The Vet on Flickr. Via Flickr: For a thorough eye examination, we must always do a fluorescein stain test. This stain will be taken up if there is a corneal ulceration. Using a UV light, you can detect the corneal ulcer as it will fluoresce bright green. The green circle in this dog is a corneal ulcer!!! Wild cocky with broken wing, a photo by Rayya The Vet on Flickr. Via Flickr: This sulphur cocky was brought in with a fractured wing. She was not ready to go and was so vibrant and full of life so I had to give her a chance. I strapped her wing and it healed. I then rehomed her. She is currently still in captivity but with a bird lover who is pretty well set up. She flies around with a few other cockys in a large aviary! The Art Of Surviving The Losses
19th Jul 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

I have only been back to work for two days after having two weeks off and this is what I already look like. I feel very distressed because I have already lost a few very special patients and it is only Tuesday. However, part of being a veterinarian is you need to learn to store that deflation away to remain functional and effective in treating the rest of your patients. You must develop an emotional coping strategy that will help boost your spirits and help you digest losses and learn from t...

Spider Calf
18th Jul 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

This is a rare case and I actually did not see this calf myself. This little calf was born alive with a major abnormality: an extra set of legs attached to his own head! There are a few calves that are born with a variety of such abnormalities but most of them usually die a few days after birth. In this case, this spider calf was full of go. I mean check out the picture below, it clearly reflects his lively spirit! My colleague Tony at Naracoorte and Penola clinic dealt with this case and was...

Fox Parade Close Up
17th Jul 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

Fox parade close up, a photo by Rayya The Vet on Flickr. Via Flickr: This is a closeup that I took today. This is when I identified that the animals were FOXES. We were driving home and we saw this sight. We actually had to stop and I walked down to assess the situation more closely. I wasn’t sure what animals they were from a distance. Not such a nice thing to see on my birthday! I would like this to be a topic for discussion. I realise foxes kill alot of animals and they usually do it f...

Cows Saying Hello!!!
16th Jul 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

I was walking my boyz down the campbells creek path walk and these four cows ran towards us. They were asking me for food but closely watching my dogs’s every move. Some even assumed the bull attack stance but thankfull didn’t go through the fence. They were so entertaining because they followed us for most of the walk. I even got to pat them and feed them some grass. As they always say, the grass is greener on the other side of the paddock and it trully was in this situation; they h...

Kangaroos Down Under…
15th Jul 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

I can still recall the excitement I felt at seeing my first kangaroo in Australia. It was at a wildlife park in Perth. Even today, after seeing heaps and heaps of kangaroos, I am still in awe of these magnificent creatures. However, one of the most beautiful moments I experienced first hand was at an alpaca stud. The picture I captured below speaks for itself. If you live in Australia and have not witnessed a kangaroo in action, whether jumping over a fence or hopping across a paddock, then you...

This Goose Is Loose…
14th Jul 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

After work and whenever I am on call, I absolutely dread being called out to a property when it is pitch dark and mostly if is freezing cold. I got home one night and the afterhours phone rang a couple of hours later. I held my breath, crossed my fingers and then took the call. This poor owner had just gotten home to a very horrific sight. She kept saying: ‘My pet goose is badly injured and I don’t know long it has been like this’. I did not seem to grasp the word goose so I k...

Sox On A Tree
13th Jul 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

One Sunday afternoon, I was driving home after being out on a property treating 2 down cows and my emergency phone rang. I stopped on the side of the road and picked up. The caller was very distressed because his cat had been missing for two days and has been spotted by his son on the netting over the vineyard about 10 meters high. The cat was meowing and unable to climb down and their son had tried to tempt it with all types of food. He could not find a ladder high enough to access the cat. Th...

BEFORE AFTER The story of ‘Brandy’ began when she was brought into me by the rangers afterhours one friday afternoon. They had been trying to track her down for a month. Many concerned citizens had been calling them about her whenever she was spotted dragging her hindlegs behind her. The firt time I looked at Brandy, I saw her beautiful face and her body that looked like a pile of bones. I then noticed that one of her hindlegs had an open fracture and the other had the hock joint c...

Wally (my husband, my strength, my life) with Larry I seriously don’t know where I would be today if it weren’t for my loving supportive husband Wally and our furry and feathery kids. I would have simply drowned myself at work and would have missed out on living a very balanced and fulfilling life. Leilah I love how much my own husband teaches me about birds everyday. The first parrot he ever owned was the one I got us one year ago. Nacho simply captivated Wally and transformed him...

Meet Tiger, My Inspiration
13th Jul 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

When I was growing up, my mother surrounded me with so many pets. She was very passionate about animals and nature and did her best to invoke the same passion within me and she was obviously successful. It is kind of ironic because when my mom reflects upon that nowadays, she damns the day she exposed me to animals. Why? Because I now live so far away from her in Australia. The first pet that I adopted and assumed total responsibility for was ‘Tiger’. My friend’s siamese cat h...
