True Troopers-Patients That Never Gave Up The Fight
11th Oct 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

I am pleased to give everyone an update on ‘Gemma’. I only operated on her 10 days ago. She has bounced back and is on her way to a full recovery. Her examination showed her vitals were all okay and she is in the clear. I can not tell you how thrilled I am to see her in this state. If she didn’t have a fighting spirit to survive and was not surrounded with a very supportive, loving and dedicated family, she would not be here today. I of course had to pose with my beautiful girl...

Desexing Your Bitch Can Save Her Life…
8th Oct 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

I have had a very hectic two weeks and was also on emergency call last weekend. I had a major sleep in today and finally feel refreshed and ready to face the world again. My hard work has mostly paid off recently and I have been rewarded by so many of my clients with brilliant gifts. I am humbled and feel so thankful that my efforts have been recognised and my patients have pulled through. It may seem like such a rhetoric for many people to hear veterinarians recommend desexing their p...

Atypical Bleeding Cases Continued…
25th Sep 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

Getting back to my interesting anaemic case load. I was still mentally trying to get my head around ‘Myff‘ and what I could have done better in her management, then I admitted another seriously anaemic patient. The owner brought in ‘Cass’, her 12-year-old female desexed labrador cross that had crashed overnight. The owner said ‘Cass’ had been going down hill slowly over the past few weeks but had suddenly collapsed last night. The poor old sausage could not ev...

Jinxed With Atypical Bleeding Cases
24th Sep 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

I really don’t know what I did to deserve so many complicated bleeding cases over the past two weeks. I was starting to think that our in-house blood machine was not working because every case I handled seemed to be suffering from anaemia (low red blood cell count). I had to collect blood from a perfectly healthy patient to check that our machine was not playing games with me. I have had to give two blood transfusions in a span of a week and recommended a few more but owners could not...

Snakes Are Out And About
19th Sep 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

So spring has finally sprung and we have been enjoying very beautiful sunny weather. I absolutely love the warmer and hot weather but this season keeps us vets much too busy to enjoy sun bathing. Last week, snake bite season begun. It is a bit early but we definitely encountered a few snake bites and a few very close calls. Snakes are out and about slithering away and looking for food & new mates. Our first close call was with our regular patients ‘Molly’ & &ls...

Cull The Ewe
12th Sep 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

Just as we closed the doors to the clinic and finished up our Saturday morning consults, the afterhours emergency phone rang and I had to go treat a horse with a huge flesh wound. It was the sweetest horse and he cooperated so well with the whole process. As I was ready to leave the property, the farmers casually asked me to have a quick look at this ewe. It is so funny how predictable farmers can be. They always have a few other cases lined up for us to have a ‘quick’...

I would first like to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to read my article entitled ‘The anti-pitbull breedist legislation’. I extend my sincere gratitude for all the contributions made via sharing your comments and taking the time to fill in the poll. I asked three questions and as promised, the results of the poll are posted below: 1. Do you own a pitbull or pitbull cross? Poll results= YES: 24% NO: 74% 2. Do you think implementing this new law...

The Anti-Pitbull Breedist Legislation
4th Sep 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

Firstly, I would like to pay my deepest condolences to the Victorian family that witnessed their toddler attacked and killed by their neighbor’s pit bull. I totally empathize with the mourning of this Victorian family and definitely support stricter laws being enforced by the government. These laws should include harsher penalties for the owners of un-contained aggressive dogs to prevent any accidental injury or death. Often the pet is euthanized after it has severely i...

Like Pet Like Owner
29th Aug 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

I had a very interesting question during one of my saturday consults. A client asked me if I often come across pets getting diagnosed with a disease that their owners incidentally have. I was baffled with the question because it does happen a lot but I can’t prove it to be an expected outcome. We also notice that many pets and their owners have similar personality traits. Check out my husband and his cat when they both happened to get groomed at the same time. Only last week I diagn...

Thirsty Kitty Cat
24th Aug 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

This week I have been blessed with what I call a good cat run. I have had heaps of my geriatric cats come in for checkups or follow-up examinations. While I am usually psyched about seeing my feline friends, they do not share the same sentiment. They arrive feeling flustered, humiliated and worst of all mortified at being in my consultation room. I had two main coons today that live in the same household that were brought in at separate times. They both hid under the lid of their dismantled...

Ear Patrol
22nd Aug 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

So I had a pretty cruisy start to the week. Only had one dog castration in the morning and had enought time to make all my follow-up calls including checkups, discussing lab results and etc. In the afternoon, I was booked up with consults and it went smoothly but I confess I did run a bit late… A 15 minute slot is simply not enough especially for an old dog check up where I discover heart issues, arthritis and skin allergies! Anyhow I powered through and survived the a...

Big Highs & Lows
19th Aug 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

This week has been a very interesting one. It was pretty hectic the first half but then it slowed down on thursday and friday. I think it got quiet because of the horrid rainy and windy weather. Lots of our clients either cancelled their appointments or simply rescheduled. It has also been a week full of mixed emotions. I have had some big highs and some huge lows. I started my first day at work at discovering I lost one of my sweetest patients Bella, a 9-year-old C...

Is It Only Wednesday?
17th Aug 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

Hello everybody. It sure has been a while. I have been suffering from blogging syndrome withdrawals. As you would have noticed, my blog site was being updated and I sure hope you like the new changes. I have also simultaneously been hammered at work. What is important is that I am back now and I am buzzing with interesting and exquisite cases that I can’t wait to share with you… The gorgeous cross puppy below is a rehomed RSPCA that I had to castrate on Monday. He is obviously ...

How Does The Time Go…
12th Aug 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

I really never find that I have enough time to accomplish all the tasks I have set out to do at work. I have been carting around this piece of paper with all these calls, cases and paperwork that needed doing. I have only managed to cross a few items from the long list on my paper. I have been trying to finalize a behavioural report for a consultation I conducted two weeks ago and it is still pending. I obviously will have to do the last touches of the report in my own time this weekend. I also ...

What Keeps A Vet Ticking With Energy…
11th Aug 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

I am utterly exhausted. I am running on very low sleep because of afterhours emergencies and a busy schedule full of interruptions/emergencies and one intensive hospital case… I have so many interesting topics and cases to discuss but can not right now because my brain is fried! I am simply feeling really confused, crabby and delirious like this premedicated kitty cat below. One of my great and very dedicated bloggers Barb asked me how I am able to cope with the loss of a beautiful patie...

A True Labrador Never Stops Wagging His/her Tail
10th Aug 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

The dark cloud has still not lifted and I am still encountering very challenging and heart breaking cases for my 4th week straight. I really need a few good winners to brighten up my spirit. Just got back from an afterhours emergency call and it is almost 1 a.m., my patient is stable and has gone home but I will be readmitting her for full workup tomorrow morning! Now back to my heartbreaking case of today. Two days ago, we admitted ‘Boss’, a lovely 10-year-old male desexed labr...

Pets Age Just As We Do
9th Aug 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

Every day I come across a consultation with a geriatric patient with untreated arthritis. My clients often mistaken signs of arthritis as being normal and part of the aging process. While arthritis is a disease of geriatric animals, obesity nowadays is also leading to early onset of arthritis in animals. Dogs and cats will not overtly show signs of discomfort. I mean look at Oscar (7-8 year old labrador) below. I examined him last week for an ear infection and discovered he was sore in his hip...

Twice Lucky
8th Aug 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

I would love to share with you the story of my neighbor’s chicken or as we call it here down under ’chook’. Jesse has two pet chooks in her well enclosed backyard. It is a hobby farming area with homes back to back. I was driving out to work one morning and my neighbor came running towards my car holding a chook wrapped up in a towel. She was very distressed and felt terrible to ambush me. She explained to me that her chooks had been attacked between 2 and 3 a.m. and she had...

Christopher You Broke Our Hearts…
7th Aug 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal

Today we were filled with sorrow because ‘Christopher‘, our famous guinea pig deteriorated in spite of all our efforts. He had improved over the first two weeks but since friday, he started to go downhill. Today, Erin & Dave, his god parents were horrified to see he had developed a pressure sore over his right hip and was losing clumps of fur around his rear. Erin had been extra judicious at checking him and bathing him regularly and giving him physiotherapy. He had also suddenly...
