Ambra Carraro volunteers at an animal shelter in Ponzano Veneto in Italy where she made a special connection with the dog no one wanted.
Poor Cornelia had been at the shelter for nearly two years, cowering in a tiny kennel and too afraid to engage with potential adopters. When Ambra came to learn about Cornelia, she tried to build a bridge. She began offering Cornelia biscuits and speaking to her softly. At first Cornelia wouldn't eve...

OLD STRAY DOG WINS 'THE LOTTERY'
Written by Nady Tzortzidou of Athens, Greece
A couple of years ago, some colleagues informed me of a little stray griffon-like dog, wandering outside the company where I worked. She seemed very sick and didn’t respond to anything.
She must have been in the streets for so long as her fur was hanging from her skin in balls. She was extremely dirty and smelly, yet had the sweetest and most gentle eyes I have ever seen. The only move she made was to wag her tai...

It took 16 rescuers and a three-day operation to bring Goldie to safety. The RSPCA team first aimed to rescue her by helicopter and use a winch to lift her, but were unable to secure the equipment on time. They also considered a boat rescue but wind and waves were simply too strong. So they lowered water and hay down to Goldie while they cooked up another pla...

TRUE LOVE
One day at an Indiana animal shelter, Jessica Petalas was working when she was introduced to a mini poodle puppy named Rusty who had just been dropped off for allegedly going to the bathroom indoors.
"He shook uncontrollably and his red curly hair was kinked and matted under his belly," Jessica said. "For a dog that was just given up for not being potty trained, he was severely skittish and flinched when large objects would move quickly in his direction. I felt horrible. I watched t...

Chimpanzee Charlie free after nine year struggle
The last known chimpanzee in Lebanon was confiscated from a zoo on Saturday and placed in Animals Lebanon’s care after courts ruled he was smuggled to Lebanon.

The shelter's founder Tamara Tarnawka is a journalist and is now on the 'enemies list' of those loyal to ousted dictator Janukovych. She's been attacked on the street, her car was torch...

BIRDFEEDER KEEPS LITTLE DOG ALIVE ALL WINTER
Reported by Ed Kostro of Illinois
Several weeks ago, a small black dog was spotted running along some railroad tracks in the bitter cold and snow and no one knew if he had traveled a great distance on those railroad tracks, as many lost and abandoned dogs do, or if he lived in the area.
Everyone who spotted him over the past several weeks soon realized that this poor little street orphan was extremely skittish and afraid. Every time that anyone got ...

Written by Yvonne Amery of Auckland, New Zealand
"On the way to the city one morning, I noticed a gull sitting at the edge of the road. I thought it was strange that he did not fly away with the noise of the car.
Coming home an hour later, the bird was still sitting in the same place. I realised something was wrong with him. This bird has a very strong beak but I only worried about that for a moment! I was terrified a car wo...

"Everyone laughed at my dreams...."
"When I look back over my life it's almost as if there was a plan laid out for me - from the little girl who was so passionate about animals who longed to go to Africa and whose family couldn't afford to put her through college. Everyone laughed at my dreams. I was supposed to be a secretary in Bournemouth."

When Thayne Mortensen's catamaran lost its mast in heavy seas off Western Australia, he was in mortal danger.
'I was stuck in like a whirlpool with the breeze on my nose and the swell just coming at me, just huge white caps and it was pitching me up and down and around," he told Yachting Monthly shortly after the incident.
But Thayne's terror grew deeper when a rescue team arrived by helicopter and he was told that he would have t...
