Venturing into the deep forest to set up camera traps in the jungle may sound like a fun camping holiday. On the contrary, the rainforest can be a harsh environment. Our wildlife warriors hack through thick undergrowth, wade through rivers and climb obstacles covered in mud, sweat, leeches, surrounded by mosquitoes and sometimes attacked by bees, all while carrying 25kg backpacks all day, every day for several days.

Deep in Malaysia’s forest of Belum-Temengor, deadly snares set by poachers lie in wait for its victim, the Malayan tiger. Merapi, a senior member of our indigenous patrol team, patrols the forest on foot for hours, up to ten kilometres a day, to seek out and deactivate snares set by poachers.

Today we have less than 200 wild Malayan tigers in Malaysia. This is a wake up call for all of us Malaysians.
Just about half a decade ago, we had 3,000 Malayan tigers roaming in our jungles. The numbers have drastically declined within the past 10 years due to poaching activities.
If we do not act now, we may see our tiger facing the same fate as the Sumatran rhino. Make our tigers a national priority and sign the Malayan tiger pledge at wwf.org.my/TigerPledge

Between 2015 and 2019, WWF-Malaysia's patrol teams collectively discovered and removed a total of 1,234 wired snares in the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex.The less snares there are, the safer our tigers and other wildlife are from poachers.
