It is estimated that there are 13,000 orangutans left in the jungles of Sabah and Sarawak. Today, their survival is threatened by the loss of habitat, forest fires, climate change and habitat fragmentation.

Indigenous and coastal communities in Sabah’s Tun Mustapha Park rely on the ocean to provide for them, both as a source of food and livelihoods. Mostly fishing communities, their daily catch of fish from the sea or shellfish from reef gleaning activities during low tide are used mainly for their own consumption. Fish is usually preserved by salting and drying under the sun, with the surplus sold to buyers and markets.

The Melanau traditional food pipus is best consumed with hot rice or sagu, a perfect combo for your tea or coffee. Akin to otak-otak from Peninsular Malaysia, the differences between the two are in the preparation and ingredients.
