Paruh penyu karah yang seakan paruh burung helang merupakan senjata utama untuk mencari makanan di kawasan terumbu karang. Paruhnya mampu mencapai celah-celah terumbu karang untuk mendapatkan span laut. Bagi kebanyakan haiwan, span ini beracun namun tidak bagi penyu karah.
