Meet Sharifah Ruqaiyah, Senior Field Biologist of the Terengganu Turtle and Painted Terrapins Conservation Project. Aside from patrolling and monitoring beaches, she carries out research activities such as satellite tracking of green turtles and hatchling dispersal pattern studies. She also rescues turtles that are accidentally caught, rehabilitating and nursing them back to health before releasing them into ocean.

Egg poachers are one of the many challenges faced by Turtle Guardians. Field biologist Ooi Ying Cheing tells us of his experience with the types of poachers he has encountered:
"Here are a few types of poachers that I can think of:
1) The ones who are usually friendly, but not so friendly when there is a turtle

"My work includes pretty much anything that has to do with turtles, such as nightly turtle nesting monitoring covering nine prime nesting beaches in Malacca with the help of passionate peeps (including local community members, graduates, interns and volunteers) to protect the turtle eggs from being poached, and ensure best hatchery practices are carried out to maximise the number of baby turtles hatched. We even successfully track baby turtles at night using a kayak!"

There's more to being a Turtle Guardian than just patrolling and monitoring beaches. Turtle Guardians have to collect data on nestings and habitats to enable better understanding of turtle habits and enhance turtle protection efforts in priority areas. Sharing the data also helps build public awareness on the importance of turtles.

In Sabah, WWF-Malaysia works with Government agencies, local communities and tour operators in Semporna to promote turtle conservation and establish turtles as their flagship species for tourism. Records show that there is an increase in nesting at Semporna’s northeast islands from June 2006 to December 2012.
