When we asked Gavin Jolis, Species Officer of the Semporna Priority Conservation Area Project, what inspires him to continue being a Turtle Guardian despite the challenges, he answered: "My great passion for marine reptiles drive me to continuously go to the field to collect data under the hot sun or in the rain, in addition to extending my role to coordinate activities with various agencies."

It's tough to be a Turtle Guardian - long hours of patrolling and monitoring means trekking up and down long stretch of beaches in the dark every night which can be extremely tiring, camping on the beach while being buffered by strong winds and heavy rain, cooking your own food and sometimes getting bitten by sandflies. Some locations have limited or no phone connection.

Here's a look at some of our Turtle Guardians in Melaka! Did you know that it costs about RM12,000 to pay one graduate or local community member to be a Turtle Guardian for the 6-month peak nesting season from April to September each year? WWF-Malaysia neeeds 14 Turtle Guardians in Melaka and 9 in Terengganu.

On Saturday we asked if you could guess what our Turtle Guardians carry around in their backpacks. The answer is a Global Positioning System (GPS), tags, tag applicators, callipers, weighing scales, measure tapes, mats, raincoats, clipboards, first aid kits, gloves and torchlights.

Turtle hatchlings face hazards even before they hatch. From the moment their eggs are deposited in the sand, predators begin eyeing these tasty morsels, be they animals or humans. Once the eggs hatch, hatchlings risk getting caught by birds, crabs and fishes as they race into the ocean, sometimes clambering over mountainous rubbish.

The Ma’ Daerah Turtle Sanctuary Centre, Terengganu, was established in June 1999. With it, WWF-Malaysia helped form MEKAR (Ma’Daerah Khazanah Rakyat), a community based organisation.
They too have become Turtle Guardians who continue to be involved in turtle conservation activities to this date. With their help, the number of eggs incubated have increased by 126% in Terengganu over the period 2003-2012!

Suara Si Karang: Voices Of Reefs Against Fish Bombing 21st Jun 2014, by WWF Malaysia
Three young silvery voices from Green Semporna, also known as GREENs, sing the plight of the beautiful yet fragile coral reefs in this song aptly entitled, ‘Suara Si Karang’. The song highlights the condition of coral reefs before and after fish bombs were detonated in a coral reef area in hopes that will inspire Malaysians to take pride in valuing and protecting our coral reefs from destructive fishing methods.
