Orang-utans can drink water without needing to decend to the ground. When water is difficult to get, they chew leaves to make sponges that absorb water from tree cavities.

While fruit-eating bats and birds can fly far distances in search of fruits, orang-utans, climbing slowly through forest canopies face a much greater challenge. Using their experience, orang-utans have to track down and be content with almost any type of fruit they encounter.

The orang-utan (P. pygmaeus) is classified as ‘totally protected’ under Part 1 of Schedule 1, Section 25 (1) of Sabah’s Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997, and is listed as ‘endangered’ in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
The North Ulu Segama (NUS) forest is home to 300 orang-utans, making it a high density habitat. Their numbers can grow, but they need your help. Please donate now: http://goo.gl/hkIZft

Aerial surveys show that orang-utan populations in NUS have declined from 400 individuals in 2004 to the current 300 individuals. This is not only due to poor forest structure but also because the southern part of the area is isolated by the Segama River.
Forest restoration through tree-replanting can improve the situation, but funding for this project will run out by the end of this year. We urgently need your help to safeguard the orang-utans' habitats. Please donate so that we m...

Orang-utans are the slowest breeding primates of all time.
It takes 10 to 15 years for an orangutan to reach sexual maturity, with females having infants only once in about 8 years. Any pressure which slows down their breeding rate or raises their death rate will impact their population enormously.
Please help us continue our forest restoration programme to ensure their long-term survival by donating at http://goo.gl/hkIZft

Save Them Before It's Too Late! 1st Oct 2014, by WWF Malaysia
Due to infertile lands and soil that is low in nutrition, some fruit trees in Sabah do not bear fruit every year. This means that orang-utans face challenges in sourcing for food. Although they eat leaves, bark and shoots, fruits rich in carbohydrates and protein are essential to their health and survival.
Help us plant more trees, visit http://goo.gl/hkIZft

As 60% of their diet consists of fruits, orang-utans depend on wild fruit trees for survival. Sadly, their food source from secondary logged forests are depleting due to unsustainable forest management practices and forest fires.
Please help us continue our forest restoration programme in Sabah to ensure the long-term viability of orang-utan populations. Help fund our projects here: http://goo.gl/hkIZft
