These are snares and bird traps, found not far from the Gerik-Jeli Highway which cuts across the Belum-Temengot Forest Complex, one of WWF-Malaysia's tiger research areas. Based on the size of the wire snares, it was apparent that the poachers were targeting large mammals, including tigers. Putting more people on the ground for research and patrolling helps reduce to number of poachers that encroach into our forests. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: We need volunteers to help us out during the Penang Green Carnival (1st Avenue Mall, Penang) and World Ocean's Week (IOI City Mall, Putrajaya) from 13 -14 June 2015 and 12 -14 June 2015 respectively. Good morning everyone! Can you tell what happened in this photo? It was taken in 2009 in the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex when a tiger decided to bite through one of our camera traps which was housed in a Pelican casing (that is actually rated as 'crush-proof')! That camera trap was hence damaged from a puncture by the tiger's canine as seen in this photo. Tigers are an umbrella species - protecting them translates to protecting large forested habitats which we rely on for countless ecosystem services such as oxygen, water, medicinal plants, and flood mitigation. WWF-Malaysia Signs On As Partner And Sponsor For GlobCom 2015

Yesterday WWF-Malaysia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Curtin University, Sarawak WWF Malaysia to become a partner and sponsor for the upcoming 13th Global Communication Project (GlobCom 2015). Held for the first time in Malaysia, the event will take place from 4 to 6 June 2015 at the university’s campus in Miri, Sarawak in collaboration with the Global Communication Institute based in Germany, and other partners. Logging and unsustainable development pose a big threat to Malayan tiger habitats. Conversion of forests to plantations results in frequent encounters between tigers and livestock. The cost for farmers can be high—livestock loss due to tigers is estimated to have cost more than RM1mil from 1993-2003 in Terengganu. In retaliation, tigers are often killed by angry villagers.
