Statement on the Sun Bear and Tapir Deaths.
As WWF-Malaysia looks back at 2017, we are extremely saddened at the number of fatal incidents involving iconic and endangered species; including the most recent deaths of two sun bears and a Malayan tapir on Christmas Eve (December 24, 2017).
In Peninsular Malaysia, a sun bear was killed in an accident along the East Coast Expressway 2 in Terengganu, while a Malayan tapir was killed in another accident in Gua Musang, Kelantan.

In April 2017, Perak made history by being the first state in Malaysia to register Royal Belum State Park for Conservation Assured | Tiger Standards (CA|TS). CA|TS is a set of criteria which allows tiger sites to check if their management will lead to successful tiger conservation. It was developed by tiger and protected area experts. One of our successes this year was the Sabah Terrestrial Conservation Programme (STCP), which works to conserve Sabah's biodiversity. This year saw the addition of more forested protected areas in the region.
Since last December, a total size of 105,414 ha was newly gazetted as protected areas which adds up to a total of 1.87 million ha. This is 26% of Sabah’s total landmass.

Wow, 115 new species have been discovered in the Mekong region! Two newly discovered mole species in Vietnam have given insights into the history and formation of Indochinese mammals since they were found in a network of streams and rivers in Northern Vietnam.

WWF-Malaysia shared outcome on “Building Community Support for the Gazettement of Tun Mustapha Park” project, at the GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) Best Practice and Knowledge Fair on 12-13 Dec 2017. Kelab Belia Anak Taritipan (ANBATAR), a youth led mangrove conservation group was formed and received a grant of USD20,000 from GEF SGP UNDP to continue their work.
