“Being in the forest is nice, but living in the forest for an extended duration, depending on only satellite phones as means of connection to the outside world is pretty scary. I constantly worry about natural disasters because our campsites are usually set up near water sources. This makes us vulnerable to flash floods, rainstorms and falling trees and branches, especially when I’m fast asleep. Orang Utan Camera Trap Sabah 21st Mar 2018, by WWF Malaysia
The orangutans at Bukit Piton forest reserve are now thriving thanks to the successful forest restoration project there spearheaded by WWF-Malaysia and the Sabah Forestry Department. There was once when I was in the forest conducting a survey, and mistakenly took a turn that lead me to an extremely difficult trail. I was already hungry and thirsty, and also terribly exhausted.
