Tourist Tragically Killed By Elephant In Thailand 4th Feb 2016, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
ELEPHANT RIDE ENDS IN TRAGIC DEATH OF TOURIST IN THAILAND
His death comes as a stark reminder that wild animals are exactly that- wild. They are not meant to be ridden or used as photography props. If they are, the chances are they have been abused in some way to make them scared of humans. And sometimes these animals simply can no longer take the abuse and exploitation and will one day “snap”, often with tragic consequences.
“If you can ride, hug or have a selfie with a wild animal, the...

UPCYCLED ENRICHMENT FOR RESCUED TORTOISES 2nd Feb 2016, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
UPCYCLED ENRICHMENT FOR RESCUED TORTOISES
We recently found a discarded metal chair frame. It was in good condition, and we hit on the idea of upcycling it into a climbing structure for the tortoises at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre! This short video explains the project. It took us about 30-40 minutes to put the structure together. In the end it turned out to be much more than just a climbing frame! The tortoises can climb and feed on hanging enrichments. They can also use the bottom part ...

THANK YOU DEBBY, YOUR TALK WAS AWE-SPIRATIONAL!
Debby is part of the team at The Hantu Bloggers, a local non-profit organisation dedicated to safeguarding Singapore's natural marine heritage. She came to ACRES HQ to talk to us about the work she does, what challenges she faces, and how she has managed to pull through those difficulties to help marine animals.
Her team is the ONLY volunteer dive organisation in Singapore that conducts guided dives for anyone and everyone interested in explorin...

A BIG THANK YOU TO CLEMENTI PRIMARY SCHOOL FROM THE ANIMALS!
Last year, ACRES and the animals received a splendid gift from 10 schools – generous donations as part of SG50 Giving. In return, we are presenting each school with a Certificate of Appreciation to express our gratitude.
The first school we visited to deliver our thanks was Clementi Primary School! Clementi Primary School has worked with ACRES in multiple ways, including collaborating on VIA (Values-in-Action) projects for the Prim...

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE ROUNDUP: 29 JANUARY 2016
1. Little Tanglin (top left) was lost in the basement car park of a condo. She isn’t a baby, but not yet a fully grown adult. The security officers on duty were extremely concerned for her well-being and patiently kept an eye on her until we arrived. Tanglin was successfully rescued and moved to a forested area with thick vegetation outside the condo – a much better place for her to forage for food!
2. Gooey (bottom left) is a wolf snake who...

REPORT YOUR WILD DOLPHIN SIGHTINGS!
To help us understand Singapore’s wild dolphin population better, please report YOUR sightings to ACRES! In a world of increasing threats to the marine environment, we need to understand these marine creatures if we are to protect them.
Our ACRES team is keeping the location of dolphin sightings confidential, so you can be sure that your reported sighting won’t result in the dolphins being disturbed.
Please call 88097835 or e-mail us at naomi@acres.org....

ERNIE, THE VERY PATIENT GIANT ASIAN POND TURTLE 26th Jan 2016, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
ERNIE, THE VERY PATIENT GIANT ASIAN POND TURTLE
Unlike the other giant Asian pond turtles in our care, Ernie tends to be alert during the usual feeding time, and on this occasion decided to patiently wait for food to be ‘served’.
Since her arrival at our rescue centre, poor Ernie has gone through some troubling times. She was bullied by other turtles in her initial enclosure, which unfortunately saw her on the receiving end of a severe bite. We moved her to a different enclosure with a ...

THANK YOU IMAN!
The December holidays are usually a time where people prefer to spend with their family and friends. Not for Iman, who decided to spare her time to help the animals in any way she can!
During her time with us, she got her hands dirty with every part of ACRES, from handing supporter engagement activities, working with the education team, to even getting right into the action with our rescue team! Oh and yes, she did mingle with our animals while helping out at our wildlife sanc...

MEET JESSICA REEVES, OUR DEDICATED WILDLIFE GUARDIAN WHO JOIN OUR WORK ALMOST EVERY SUNDAY SINCE 2013!
1. How did you get involved with ACRES?
- I knew about the work that ACRES did already, and have been a volunteer working with all sorts of animals over many years, but have never worked with reptiles – I am English & lived 10 years in Holland, and the import of reptiles into Europe is, fortunately, extremely restricted (though sadly Europe also has an illegal trade in wild animals). It ap...

SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT – HOUSE TIPS FOR RED-EARED SLIDER
August 2015, the Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) went down to investigate a case of abandonement where a pair of red eared slider (RES) was alleged to have been provided with insufficient care.
It was reported that the RES were found near the common rubbish chute along a HDB flat. The sliders were found in terrible conditon (milky water, decomposing food, chicken bones etc). The container containing the RES was rather small for t...

THE FIRST SCHOOL VISIT TO AWRC OF 2016!
During the first week of school, we were visited by the Secondary 3 students of Bishan Park Secondary School on a beautiful animal-friendly Thursday.
It was a totally new experience for the students to learn about animal welfare in Singapore’s first and only wildlife rescue centre. At the end of the visit, they became more aware of the ways they can contribute to making the world a better place for animals. The morning group topped it up with a vegetar...

OSTRICH, THE JAVAN MYNA GETS HIS FREEDOM
Every now and then, we come across odd rescue situations. This rescue we faced at 231 Yishun Street 21 was one of the strangest. A Javan myna (named Ostrich by us) got his head stuck in a gap on the ledge of the HDB block. Lucky for him, a vigilant resident from the 5th floor spotted the bird struggling on the other side of the block on the 6th floor and called ACRES.
When we arrived to the house where Ostrich was stuck, we had to overcome another situ...
