A NEW GADGET TO HELP WITH OUR IN-HOUSE ANIMAL FOOD PRODUCTION!
We at ACRES are so delighted with our latest ‘gadget’: the Aerobin Compost Bin! The great folks from Integrated Motion Technology Pte Ltd (IMT) kindly donated the Aerobin to ACRES.
At the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre, we feed a lot of vegetables to the animals in our care. The tortoises don’t really eat the stems, so we usually discard them or scatter them around roots of plants to act as fertiliser. We’ve been told that a...

GO MEATLESS THIS LENT TO PRESERVE THE ENVIRONMENT AND SAVE ANIMALS!
This Lent, The Church of St Mary of the Angels (SMOTA) has taken on a new Franciscan initiative to go meat-less. This is towards their efforts to care for the environment, which includes animals.
Meat consumption is a major driver of climate change, the extinction crisis and many other environmental problems .Did you know that reducing the amount of meat we eat directly helps wildlife? Not to mention reducing the suffering o...

On the day of their visit, they made their first direct contribution to ACRES and the animals at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC). The students worked together to give the Outdoor Sanctuary Area, and other areas, a much-neede...

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE ROUND UP: 26 FEBRUARY 2016
COCOA - RESCUED FROM A GLUE TRAP
Cocoa is a Eurasian tree sparrow, and a recent victim of a glue trap intended to catch lizards. Fortunately, Cocoa didn’t lose any wing feathers or sustain any injuries during her ordeal. But she was exhausted from shock and from probably struggling to free herself.
It was very late at night when our rescue team picked her up, and we still had other calls to attend to. We needed to take her to the ACRES Wi...

DO YOU KNOW ANYONE WHO HAS UNUSED WATER TUBS/TANKS LYING AROUND?
For this week’s Animal Care update, we’d like highlight that some of the tanks/tubs used to house animals at the AWRC are ageing, and it’s time to replace them! Most of the water tanks/tubs that hold our turtles were donated in the past. Many of them are old and some have started to leak. We have been patching up the leaks here and there, but we now need new tanks to replace many of the existing ones, and also to enable us t...

SAY “HI” TO OUR INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER - YUIKA SUGAWARA, FROM JAPAN!
Yuika came to know about our volunteering programme through Xu Bo Art and Culture Exchange, and she volunteered with us from 25th January to 21st February.

THANK YOU FOR BEING THEIR VOICE
Someone once shared the following story with us:
“I once dreamt that I was walking in the park with my dog, Spock. He could talk, and we had a long meaningful conversation as we walked. Nearing the end of the walk, he asked me: Why is it that humans just take animals from the wild even though I've seen courteous and kind people around all the time!
I replied: It’s because, Spock, no matter how gracious a person is, those animals cannot tell that person "I'...

World Pangolin Day 20th Feb 2016, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
IT’S WORLD PANGOLIN DAY TODAY!
ACRES would like to celebrate this day - by sharing with you a rescue video of one of the most endangered animals in the world!
Here, we see, Sally, a Sunda Pangolin (Manis javanica), slowly finding her bearings as we herded her to an environment that is finally familiar to her. It may seem insignificant to us, but this would mean a safe night to Sally.
She was found wandering around on the small roads near a residential area that was adjacent to her habitat,...

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE ROUND UP: 19 FEBRUARY 2016
1. Mustafa is an adult (and feisty) rock pigeon who somehow got stuck inside a fire exit window at the Mustafa shopping centre. We do not know how Mustafa ended up there, but a kind member of public spotted him and called us for help, as the bird was there the whole day. Thanks to the very helpful sales people who let us climb in and retrieve Mustafa safely and release!
2. Rochor is a reticulated python who was found at a construction site alo...

OUR SINCERE THANKS TO ALL WHO RESPONDED TO OUR REQUEST FOR OLD NEWSPAPERS!
A few weeks ago, we made an urgent call-out for old newspapers. Newspapers are important for our daily animal care and rescue operations as they mean we can provide rescued animals with suitable bedding and substrate at little cost, and they also have other related uses. Using old papers also means that they get re-used and serve more than one purpose.
Many of you responded, and even dropped by our rescue centre to pass...
