MAKE YOUR MARK WITH ACRES!
One of the issues that ACRES would like to shed more light on is cruelty in the tourism industry.
Sadly, wild animals are still being exploited in the name of “entertainment”. Tourists unwittingly continue to support circus-style animal shows and wild animal photography as they do not know the suffering involved.
So what can you do to make a difference for these animals?
We are calling out for youths who are passionate to give animals a voice by speaking on be...

JOAN: VICTIM OF A HIT AND RUN
Earlier this month, we received a call regarding a long-tailed macaque who had been hit by a vehicle at the junction of Jalan Anak Bukit and Dunearn Road and subsequently left injured in the road.
Joan, as we named her, was rushed to the skilled veterinary team at the Animal Recovery Veterinary Referral Centre (ARVRC). Thankfully, Joan survived her ordeal, but she sustained serious injuries including a dislocated jaw and abrasions on her face and shoulder, as we...

EX-BATTERY HENS EXPERIENCE THEIR FIRST MOMENTS OF FREEDOM
Sadly, chickens are among the animals most abused at the hands of humans. In many parts of the world, including Asia, hens who are farmed to supply eggs for human consumption are commonly confined in tiny “battery cages” that cause immense suffering. The cages are so cramped that hens are not able to perform important natural behaviours. Often, then hens can’t even stretch their wings. Each hen may live in a space equivalent to an...

DO YOU HAVE ANY BROKEN/UNWANTED CLAY POTS?
We recently began making small changes to our tortoise enclosures to spruce them up a bit, and these flower clay pots make great hide boxes for the tortoises! Having several smaller hiding areas seems to be a better option than a single large hiding area, as it takes up less space and it’s easier to move the hiding areas around, to allow us to keep on changing and enriching the environment.
We need many more of these pots! We are looking for large p...

THANK YOU FOR RESPECTING MACAQUES!
Singapore is increasingly developing and creating urban areas next to forests. With shrinking habitat, and urban areas close by, macaques sometime wander out of their forest and into nearby houses and schools. They mean no harm, but we understand how this may be alarming.
We want to thank everyone who has called ACRES when faced with such a situation - giving us the opportunity to resolve the issue ethically.
Singapore is their home as much as ours, so we...

SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT – MYNAH ABUSED BY COFFEESHOP CLEANER
The ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) received feedback about a cleaner who abused birds at the coffee shop at which he works.
It was alleged that the said man has been catching birds that enter the coffee shop premises and throwing them onto the floor.
The ACIU investigated and found that poor hygiene and ineffective disposal of food were issues that the coffee shop failed to address. This led to birds feeding on leftover...

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE ROUND UP: 11 MARCH 2016 - MOMMA SQUIRREL COMES BACK FOR HER LOST BABIES
One night, a concerned gardener called our rescue hotline about 3 baby squirrels found in a fallen nest in a condo’s garden. We requested him to keep the babies for the night and in the morning, show us exactly where the nest was found. He was kind enough to keep them safe and warm for the night, with minimal handling.
In the morning, when our rescue officers arrived at the spot, we decided to ma...

SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT – UPDATE ON MYNAH ABUSE CASE 5th Mar 2016, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT – UPDATE ON MYNAH ABUSE CASE
The authorities have now completed investigations for the case, and enforcement action will be taken against the offender.
Several months ago, we looked into a case where a mynah was tied outside the window of a flat and the owner of the flat refused to release the bird. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) was called to help with the release of the bird.
We urged members of the public to refrain from harming our native wild animal species and p...
