EVER SEEN A COMMON PALM CIVET EAT? 12th Apr 2016, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
EVER SEEN A COMMON PALM CIVET EAT?
Common palm civets are native to our sunny island. They are nocturnal and shy animals who love feasting on delicious fruits like longans. They are also known to eat insects and small animals.
They are often mistaken as raccoons, ferrets or a 'cat-like animal'.
These animals are often cruelly used for the Kopi Luwak industry. Please do your part and not buy any Kopi Luwak.
In this video, you will see a Common palm civet we rescued enjoying a longan!

BYE BYE YOYO – STAY SAFE!
Yoyo, a long-tailed macaque, was rescued in Yishun on the 13th of March 2016. At the time of rescue, he was in shock with visible head and facial injuries, including to both eyes. The nature of his injuries, and the fact that he was found in the middle of a road, strongly indicated that Yoyo had been hit by a vehicle.
We immediately took Yoyo to the Animal Recovery Veterinary Referral Centre (ARVRC), where the veterinary team wasted no time in attending to him.
Due ...

SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT – MANAGING BIRDS WHO VISIT EATERIES
The Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) has been receiving feedback on mishandling of birds who enter outdoor and semi-outdoor eating places, mostly coffee shops. Often times we realise that shop owners struggle to find long term solutions to have the issue resolved. This may lead to behaviours where owners tend to use methods such as catapulting the birds. We would like to emphasize that this is an act of animal cruelty and enforceme...

NTU STUDENTS THREW A ‘PARTY’ FOR MOTHER EARTH!

We were invited to be part of GreenFest, Our Earth, an awareness-raising event organised by a committee of NTU students who strongly believe in saving the Earth. We took the opportunity to promote cruelty-free living, one of the 6 focus areas of ACRES!
That day, we conversed with many students and school staff about choosing cruelty-free products that are no...

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE ROUND UP: 08 APRIL 2016
1. (TOP ROW) One evening, we received a call from a kind and concerned family about a missing nest of a White-bellied sea eagle couple, that her family has been observing for days from their condo unit across the road. When our team visited it was too dark and understood that the access into the forests across the road was difficult. We revisited the next morning and thanks to our patient and persistent rescue officers who searched for over an hour...

MEATLESS MONDAYS- THE IMPORTANCE OF MEAT REDUCTION IN TACKLING CLIMATE CHANGE
Here’s a recent feature in The Straits Times which explains why meat reduction will help address the urgent issue of climate change.
“The livestock sector is responsible for 7.1 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions a year - about 15 per cent of the global total, a report by international affairs think-tank Chatham House notes.
This is equivalent to the exhaust emissions from all the world's vehicles ...

SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT – END THE ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRADE
The illegal wildlife trade has been rising and driving many animal species to extinction. Often times, they are smuggled in thermoses and nylon stockings, stuffed into toilet paper tubes, hair curlers and hubcaps. This is a serious issue affecting animals worldwide and it is important to end the cruel trade to keep our wildlife safe and going. It is disheartening to know that such crimes do happen here in Singapore although strict laws are...

THIS IS THE SPIRIT OF VOLUNTEERISM AND ADVOCACY!
14 boys from Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) chose to work with ACRES for their Values-in-Action (VIA) project last month.
These enthusiastic boys spent their recess time and after-school hours talking to their peers about animal protection and the work of ACRES. They also set up a small exhibition on the school grounds to raise awareness on cruelty-free living. What really moved us was when they decided to extend the initial 2-day event in...

Watch the video to see Joan return home to the forest!
We will do our best to check up on Joan and make sure that she is doing well.

HOT! HOT! HOT!!!
The recent soaring temperatures in Singapore have made our work at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) even tougher than usual, and we’ve also had to make sure that the animals in our outdoor enclosures have plenty of opportunities to cool off.
Here’s a glimpse of some of our “wild” residents who know how to beat the heat in such hot weather!
These photos were taken by our dedicated volunteers and staff who have been working selflessly during the heatwave. Working...

THANK YOU FOR SAYING “NO” TO ILLEGALLY KEEPING WILD ANIMALS AS PETS
The illegal exotic pet trade is sadly still rampant in many parts of the world – including Singapore. This ongoing illicit trade means that animals are cruelly snatched from the wild, and transported in horrendous conditions to countries in which they don’t belong.
This trade not only threatens populations in the wild; it also involves much suffering to the individual animals who find themselves caught up in the trade...

SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT – REPORTS ON ILLEGAL FEEDING OF MONKEYS
The ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) has been receiving feedback about members of the public illegally feeding native macaques (monkeys) at nature parks and reserves.
We would like to stress that the feeding of wild macaques in Singapore’s nature reserves is illegal. Please let your friends and family know this, in case they are unaware!
Here are some reasons why you should never feed wild macaques:
