SUNSET SLITHERS BACK HOME!
Sunset is a Kopstein’s bronzeback snake, who was found inside someone’s house. Fear is a common and natural response to snakes. So when we received the call, we advise not to panic but to keep an eye, or close the room and wait for us. Many callers understand and wait for us to arrive, however most often our worst fears come true. From fear, when the snake was seen at the storeroom, the resident sprayed Baygon on the snake and slammed the door shut.
We arrived ...

HOW MANY ANIMALS HAVE WE RESCUED SO FAR?
Over the last 15 years we have rescued over 9,000 animals, from fragile baby birds to the magnificent green turtles that grace our beaches.
The number of calls to our Wildlife Rescue Hotline increases year by year. We rescued just over 1,000 animals in the year 2011/2012, and an incredible 3,100 in the year 2014/2015.
What will the rest of 2016 bring? And 2017? 2018?
We simply cannot continue to help the increasing number of animals in need without...

TIME TO REVISIT AN OLD VIDEO ABOUT TORTOISE ENRICHMENT!
It was only a few years ago that all of the animals at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) were housed indoors inside our quarantine building (mistakes made by the contractor during the construction of the centre meant that we couldn’t use the outdoor enclosures as planned). Back then, animal care work was more tedious, with the need to continually replace the old newspaper bedding for all our tortoises.
Due to the concrete environ...

FOUR 12 YEAR-OLDS CAME FORWARD TO HELP ANIMALS
Last month, we welcomed four students to our wildlife rescue centre. You might be wondering: why were there only four students?
These Year 6 students from Nexus International School - Camille, Georgia, Shagun and Sarah - came up with the idea to learn more about ACRES and helping animals. So they came to us, together with their teacher, to find out how youths like themselves can make a difference for animals.
After their visit, they invited us ...

BABY BIRDS: WHEN DO THEY NEED RESCUE?
We receive a number of calls from concerned members of public of fallen baby birds or their nest and it is definitely heart-warming to note our society’s empathy for these helpless-looking birds.
Many a times, young birds leave the nest as fledglings (pictures on the right). Fledglings closely resemble adults and are able to make short flights. The adults are often within view, guiding these fledglings as they learn to fly and forage. It is an importan...

WHEN SHOPPING OR EATING OUT, YOU CAN FIGHT ANIMAL ABUSE!
As a consumer, you can avoid supporting animal suffering by choosing more humane alternatives!
For example, instead of cows' milk, you can try plant-based milks, such as soy, rice, oat, hazelnut or almond milk. If you purchase eggs, you can find “cage free” eggs in many supermarkets and some restaurants or, even better, you can use egg alternatives in your baking and cooking.
Another way you can save animals and help the planet is...

EVER SEEN A COMMON PALM CIVET EAT? 12th Apr 2016, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
EVER SEEN A COMMON PALM CIVET EAT?
Common palm civets are native to our sunny island. They are nocturnal and shy animals who love feasting on delicious fruits like longans. They are also known to eat insects and small animals.
They are often mistaken as raccoons, ferrets or a 'cat-like animal'.
These animals are often cruelly used for the Kopi Luwak industry. Please do your part and not buy any Kopi Luwak.
In this video, you will see a Common palm civet we rescued enjoying a longan!

BYE BYE YOYO – STAY SAFE!
Yoyo, a long-tailed macaque, was rescued in Yishun on the 13th of March 2016. At the time of rescue, he was in shock with visible head and facial injuries, including to both eyes. The nature of his injuries, and the fact that he was found in the middle of a road, strongly indicated that Yoyo had been hit by a vehicle.
We immediately took Yoyo to the Animal Recovery Veterinary Referral Centre (ARVRC), where the veterinary team wasted no time in attending to him.
Due ...

SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT – MANAGING BIRDS WHO VISIT EATERIES
The Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) has been receiving feedback on mishandling of birds who enter outdoor and semi-outdoor eating places, mostly coffee shops. Often times we realise that shop owners struggle to find long term solutions to have the issue resolved. This may lead to behaviours where owners tend to use methods such as catapulting the birds. We would like to emphasize that this is an act of animal cruelty and enforceme...

NTU STUDENTS THREW A ‘PARTY’ FOR MOTHER EARTH!
It was mid-March. The sun was scorching hot – best time to talk about global warming. We took the opportunity to promote cruelty-free living, one of the 6 focus areas of ACRES!
That day, we conversed with many students and school staff about choosing cruelty-free products that are no...

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE ROUND UP: 08 APRIL 2016
1. (TOP ROW) One evening, we received a call from a kind and concerned family about a missing nest of a White-bellied sea eagle couple, that her family has been observing for days from their condo unit across the road. When our team visited it was too dark and understood that the access into the forests across the road was difficult. We revisited the next morning and thanks to our patient and persistent rescue officers who searched for over an hour...
