Animals Are Not Freight 29th Aug 2016, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
ANIMALS ARE NOT FREIGHT DAY
Today, we – together with people all over the world- commemorate the 20th anniversary of the world’s worst ever live export disaster, when 67,488 sheep died.
Every year, millions of animals are transported long distances to slaughter, suffering immensely.
Live transportation happens all over the world, including South East Asia. About 341,00 pigs are brought by ferry into Singapore each year for slaughter. Millions of chickens and ducks are transported via th...

THANK YOU DESMOND AND FRIENDS FROM BUBBLY PETZ!
On 17th August, we welcomed 5 energetic youngsters from Bubbly Petz to carry out community work at our wildlife rescue centre.
Led by Bubby Petz owner, Desmond, the 5 of them spent the rainy afternoon cleaning up the volunteer room that had been flooded, and showering our beloved in-house furry kids: our resident rescued dogs. But that’s not all! They also replaced the old wooden barrier in the tortoise enclosure with a brand new brick wall!

LET THE KIDS PLAN THEIR OUTINGS!
Expanding from our previous post ‘HOW DO YOU SUPPORT A CHILD WHO SHOWS LOVE FOR ANIMALS?’ on 6 August, here is another family who has showered their child with support and encouragement in helping the animals she loves. Ankita, aged 12, strongly believes that reptiles, such as snakes and turtles, need to be shown care, even though they are not always considered to be “cute”.
Ankita suggested bringing her family and friends to the ACRES Wildlife Rescue C...

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE – SPECKLE
Last week, we received a call from someone who was concerned about a pigeon dangling from the roof of the multi-storey carpark at Mustafa shopping centre.
As often happens, our busy rescue team was already in the midst of dealing with three other cases at the time when we received the call. Our thanks go to the kind caller and her dad, who untangled the pigeon from the mess and left her safely contained in a crate at a quiet corner until we arrived.
“Sp...

MY WORST JOURNEY EXPERIENCE
Can you imagine a journey of hours, or even days, in a very crowded space, with nothing to eat or drink? A journey where you cannot freely move or rest? Imagine being sick or injured during the journey without any possibility of assistance or of stopping.
For millions of animals worldwide, these are the conditions of their last journey: the one that will lead them to the slaughterhouse.
The suffering during long distance live transport has to stop, and you can sp...

JUVENILE SQUIRREL ENJOYING SOME FALLEN FLOWERS 23rd Aug 2016, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
JUVENILE SQUIRREL ENJOYING SOME FALLEN FLOWERS
Not only do we rescue wild animals, but certain areas at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) also provide a haven for native wildlife.
We recently spotted a juvenile squirrel enjoying some fallen flowers from our banana plants. We had to maintain some distance so as to not frighten her away, but we managed to capture this short video clip.
At our premises, we grow numerous banana plants, but we hardly ever get to harvest the fruits for the r...

MEET OUR NATIVE WILDLIFE: SINGAPOREAN PARROT!
The long- tailed parakeet (Psittacula longicauda) is a resident breeder in Singapore. Adults are about 41cm in length. This species has pink cheeks and green overall plumage with red upper mandible, brown lower mandible and a long bluish- purple tail. The pink colouration on the face is more prominent in males than females.
These parakeets can be found in some neighbourhood parks in Singapore. However, they are globally near-threatened. The main...

SPEAK UP FOR ANIMALS! IT ONLY TAKES 20 SECONDS
Every year, millions of animals are cruelly transported over long distances from where they were raised to where they will be slaughtered, suffering immensely. The greater the distance, the greater the suffering.
During long distance transport animals can be exposed to:
- Overcrowding. Animals are crammed tightly into vehicles. Many are injured or trampled to death
- Exhaustion and dehydration. They can be in transit for days, suffering extremes...

A BIG THANK YOU TO THE STUDENTS FROM ANGLO-CHINESE SCHOOL (INDEPENDENT)!
Five students from Anglo-Chinese School volunteered with us in July and August for their Service Learning Project.
Despite their busy school curriculum, they headed on over to our ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) after their classes ended, to assist with the maintenance work around our premises. Besides helping us with the work on-site, they also took the initiative to organise a fundraising event, to raise much-needed...

THANK YOU VEGANBURG!
VeganBurg provided a very tasty treat for ACRES when they came to our office with free mini-burgers for our staff!
These burgers are completely vegan – they’re 100% plant based! VeganBurg created these burgers to prove that burgers can be delicious without contributing to climate change, because meat production contributes a significant amount of carbon dioxide to climate change!
These burgers are sustainable, and great in taste AND nutritional value! And of course, t...

SATURDAY NIGHT CRIME: HONG KONG CUSTOMS OFFICALS SEIZE 4,000KG OF PANGOLIN SCALES
On 23 June 2016, officials from the Hong Kong Customs seized 4,000kg of pangolin scales, estimated to involve between 1,100 and 6,600 African pangolins, from a container at the Kwai Chung Custom House Cargo Examination Compound. NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE ROUND UP – 19 AUG 2016
Meet “W”, the water monitor lizard who was found in private residential grounds. The estate management had contained “W” as shown in the left picture, and called us for help.
When we arrived, we were shocked to find “W” that way even though this is not the first time we find ourselves in such situations. After sharing about monitor lizards, the staff was apologetic and assured us that this will not happen again.
Unfortunately “W...

E.T, a Sunda slow loris, got lost in a car park right here in Singapore. Thanks to a kind member of the public, ACRES was called to help, and E.T. was rescued and released in a forested area. In this image, you can see E.T. high in a tree after his successful release.

MEET OUR NATIVE WILDLIFE: SINGAPORE’S MINI “LEOPARDS”
As a result of urban development, leopards and many other big mammals have gone extinct in Singapore.
However, Singapore is still the home to the elusive, nocturnal leopard cat: the last reminding wild cat here. Their spotted fur helps them to blend into the shadows of their surroundings, and their unique spotted coat can be used as a way to identify individuals.
But only a few leopard cats remain in Singapore, due to habitat loss...
