RESCUED TORTOISES NEED YOUR HELP! At the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre, we have about 7 different species of tortoises from across the globe – all victims of the illegal exotic pet trade. This gives an idea just how widespread the illegal wildlife trade is - which is pushing many species of tortoises to the brink of extinction. Their diet varies, with the Indian star tortoises preferring a grassy diet whilst other species, such as the red-footed tortoises, preferring fruits and other types o...

CHIPPY AND YOKO - JOURNEY BACK TO THE WILD Meet Chippy and Yoko, both wild long-tailed macaques recently rescued. Both had to be unfortunately removed from the wild due to public feeding which has altered their wild behaviours and resulted in complaints from the public. ACRES has been working hard over the past month to rehabilitate them and they have both been responding well :-) No more human food for them and they are loving and eating lots of food they can find in the wild. They have bec...

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE ROUND UP – 23 SEP 2016 We were alerted to the cases of snake sightings (shown in the photos), and to our shock both were dead on arrival. Similarly the cobra (on the right) from another case at a different location was also dead on arrival. Even though we did not rule out the possibility of grass cutting machinery injuring the snakes, we often come across such situations where the snakes are dead either through trauma or other methods like hot water. Unfortunately, the ...

SPEEDY, AGILE TORTOISES! Many of us share the opinion that tortoises are slow, rather clumsy animals. But that’s not necessarily so! Recently, we engaged our wildlife sanctuary volunteers to conduct some dietary enrichment for the rescued tortoises in our care at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC). The volunteers placed chopped pumpkin at elevated areas within the enclosures in order to encourage the tortoises to engage in physical exercise, as well as stimulate the tortoises’ brain c...

ICONIC ACRES RESCUES: PYTHON STUCK IN A DRAIN Check out this intense footage of our wildlife rescue team saving a reticulated python – called Shrapnel - who got stuck in a pipe. Reticulated pythons naturally live in drains so if you do see one in such a location, don’t panic, it usually isn’t a cause for concern. In this instance, Shrapnel did need some help so we stepped in (if you are concerned about a wild animal, for example if they seem stuck or injured, then please do call our 24-...

FOX- RESCUED FROM A GLUE TRAP Meet “Fox”, a young Javan mynah who was rescued from a glue trap, and was eventually released following a couple of cleaning sessions. Any animal who gets caught in a glue trap – unless they are rescued - will suffer a painful and slow death resulting from dehydration, starvation, and at times self-mutilation in attempt to free themselves. Please remember that animals such as rodents visit any area in search of food or shelter. Removal of food, maintaini...

ANIMAL CARE UPDATE 13 SEP 2016 Meet Andrea and Audrey, the giant Asian pond turtles rescued off the roads in Singapore – checking out their revamped enclosure together. We have given a little touch to their enclosure with the help of volunteers - by changing their tank set ups and enclosure layout. This will also serve as an environmental enrichment to both of them who appreciate privacy from care-givers (and also between themselves). The revamp also included changes to our filtration syste...
