WHAT IS IT LIKE TO VISIT A WILDLIFE RESCUE CENTRE? 1. You get to listen to personal stories of the animals you see there. Being treated as individuals with unique personalities instead of exhibits, the animals’ stories – where/what they were rescued from, how they have been doing so far – are shared through their caretakers at rescue centres. It is definitely more interesting to know about the animals’ amusing/touching/inspiring encounters, rather than just general facts. 2. You realis...

What Does Cage-Free Really Mean For Chickens?
6th Oct 2016, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

They have more freedom to express more of their natural behaviours, including walking, moving around, perching, and laying eggs in nests. These basic needs are denied in the battery cages system. “Roughly 90 percent of the 280 million chickens in the egg industry are crammed inside barren, wire cages known as battery c...

EDUCATION HAS THE POWER TO CHANGE EVEN THE OLDEST PRACTICES Last year, the Nepalese temple authorities announced the end of their centuries-old Hindu tradition of mass animal slaughter during the Gadhimai festival that occurs once every five years. The sacrificial practice was stopped because they “realised that animals are so much like us – they have the same organs as us…and feel the same pain we do.” Earlier this year, the Forestry Bureau of Taiwan initiated an amendment to the coun...

RESCUED TORTOISES NEED YOUR HELP! At the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre, we have about 7 different species of tortoises from across the globe – all victims of the illegal exotic pet trade. This gives an idea just how widespread the illegal wildlife trade is - which is pushing many species of tortoises to the brink of extinction. Their diet varies, with the Indian star tortoises preferring a grassy diet whilst other species, such as the red-footed tortoises, preferring fruits and other types o...

ACRES has been working hard over the past month to rehabilitate them and they have both been responding well :-) No more human food for them and they are loving and eating lots of food they can find in the wild. They have bec...

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE ROUND UP – 23 SEP 2016 We were alerted to the cases of snake sightings (shown in the photos), and to our shock both were dead on arrival. Similarly the cobra (on the right) from another case at a different location was also dead on arrival. Even though we did not rule out the possibility of grass cutting machinery injuring the snakes, we often come across such situations where the snakes are dead either through trauma or other methods like hot water. Unfortunately, the ...
