THANK YOU FOR RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT OUR NATIVE WILDLIFE! "As an architectural designer, my passion is to create biophilic designs to enhance the coexistence between people and wildlife because nature is crucial for our psychological and physical health, especially living in these stressful urban cities. Therefore, it is essential for us to learn to co-exist with our wild neighbours in our cities by sharing our spaces with them." – Teo Wee Yang, 19 Have you seen our new native wildlife roa...

WHEN KINDNESS HURTS: THE EFFECTS OF RELEASING ANIMALS The ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) responded to a tip-off and looked into the animal release/liberation practices in Singapore. These practices involve the release of animals that can result in thousands of deaths. Apart from compromising the welfare of the surviving animals, the impact to the ecosystem can be highly detrimental while releasing (abandoning) animals purchased as pets is illegal. The shocking observations rev...

RED-EARED SLIDERS/TERRAPINS FOUND WITH WHITE SPOTS: PETS OR WILD ANIMALS? [Graphic images in album] Early this year, ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit visited 14 aquarium shops in Singapore that sold red-eared terrapins. Out of these 14 shops, 10 shops had each put on display for sale juvenile red-eared terrapins who had generalised or round, distinct whitish lesions on the shell (as shown in 4 of the photos). Whilst some of the shopkeepers informed us that a number of terrapins have di...

MONKEY SEE, MONKEY… DON’T FEED! You’ve probably read this advice in several places these days, but perhaps not everyone in your neighbourhood is aware. THE CASE OF SEGAR ROAD MONKEY Thank you to all the individuals who have reached out to us concerning the monkey at Segar Road. It has been a trying time for everyone involved, especially the individuals who were injured by the monkey, and their families. We want to reiterate the underlying point; feeding alters a wild animal's behaviour. This entire situation could have been avoided if the human food provision was promptly stopped and the monkey was not conditioned to humans, resulting in...

It’s not easy working a 32-hour shift with intermittent yelling at times (we have a number of nice callers who keep the morale up) or to ensure that the right menu is served at the right time for our choosy rescued animals. All these while, constantly raising the much needed awareness, but the rewards are priceless! We thank each of our rescue officers, care-givers on duty everyday including public holiday for going the distance (because ...
