13 SEP - LIVE ANIMAL TRANSPORT AWARENESS DAY Every year, millions of farmed animals are sent on horrendous long journeys to be slaughtered for meat in other countries. Their suffering is the stuff of horror movies. Crammed together in filthy, confined spaces, exposed to the elements, and denied food and water, they may suffer like this for days and even weeks. Not surprisingly, many die in transit from suffocation, heat stress and dehydration. Find out what you can do to help end this su...

START SMALL, DREAM BIG At ACRES, we believe kids can make a difference for animals no matter what their age is! The students from Initium Academy demonstrated this by harvesting vegetables from a farm and donating them for the animals. They even helped to prepare the vegetables for the animals by washing the vegetables and attended our preschool talk to learn more about about animal sentience, the illegal pet trade, and ways to help animals. Thank you to the staff and students at Initium Ac...

STILL CANNOT CHOOSE BETWEEN BEING AFRAID OF THE SNAKES AND KEEPING THEM AS PETS?! Our answer is NEITHER. Snakes are harmless to humans unless threatened or cornered, which may turn them defensive. They are wild animals and it is already good enough reason why they are not belonging to anyone, but to the wild. Learn more about snakes, their behaviours and the threats they are facing in contemporary world by becoming a Wildlife Supporter for the rescued animals – http://acres.org.sg/suppor...

STORY OF SOFTEE – AND OTHER TURTLES “IN THE SOUP”! In August, our team received a call for a stranded turtle on East Coast beach. Our hearts sank when we received a photo from the concerned caller, showing an Asiatic soft-shelled turtle. The kind caller helped by bringing the turtle away from the sea water, and rinsing with fresh water. Joshua, Lucie and Reizal our rescue officers on duty rescued Softee, who passed away upon arrival. Very often people may buy soft-shelled turtles and r...

MACAQUE AT PUNGGOL CAUGHT BY AVA! For the past week, ACRES has been receiving calls about a lone macaque at Punggol drive. The macaque had been sighted at the HDB residential areas which is near the waterway and park connector. This green space is home to much wildlife and this macaque happened to find her way there. We got feedback that people have been feeding the macaque. We immediately contacted the town council to arrange to do a visit to the residential estate to raise awareness about ...

DIPS, THE COBRA Dips is an Equatorial spitting cobra who had slipped into a pool in an unoccupied property and couldn't get out as the surface was too slippery. Even though cobras are good swimmers, Dips could have died from exhaustion and drowning, if not for a kind real estate agent who noticed Dips and called our hotline for help, and our officers Carmen Choong and Lester attended to Dips. Dips has been safely rescued and released! #ACRES #WildlifeRescue #SpittingCobra #NajaSumatrana #S...

ANIMAL ALLIES POSITION PAPER ON ANIMAL-BASED DIET CONSUMPTION: FOR A HEALTHIER SINGAPORE! “Our government has taken many crucial steps in promoting a healthy diet in Singapore, while preserving the country’s rich food culture. However, the high consumption of animal-based foods such as meat, milk and eggs will pose challenges in ensuring a healthy, happy and productive population. Scientific evidence indicates that compared to plant-based diets, diets high in animal-based foods are assoc...

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WHALE SHARK DAY! These graceful sharks are the largest fish in the sea, reaching over 12m in length! They are covered in beautiful star-like spots, but the reason for this remains a mystery. The tide is turning for these gentle giants: while sadly still killed for their meat and fins, in many places whale sharks are now considered more valuable alive thanks to eco-tourism! If you’re lucky enough to swim with them, choose an ethical operator that doesn’t allow the shar...

A BIRTHDAY GIFT (IT FORWARD) As parents, you might be familiar with the amount of material goods that kids receive at birthday parties. Gift-It-Forward was founded last year as a simple and fun way to teach children about social responsibility, and ACRES is a beneficiary. How it works: When the birthday celebrant sends out party invitations through this site, they can set up a gift fund that friends and family can contribute to instead of buying gifts. A portion of the fund (50-100%) will go...
