THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS FROM MALAYSIA & KOREA! August and September were culturally colourful months for all of us at ACRES. In August, we welcomed four veterinary students from University Putra Malaysia (UPM) - YanNei, Adeline, Maizatul and Fadhilah who showed their passion and enthusiasm in helping animals during their placement with our animal care department. Besides learning about wildlife in Singapore, they also got to try the only halal-certified vegan food in Singapore which was a unique d...

JACUZZI FOR IGUANAS “WHAT IS GOING ON!?” The ACRES Wildlife Supporters may know the story behind this picture (check your inbox for June update!) but we want to share it with everyone else too. This is the iguanas’ water baths. Living in captivity and/or indoors may cause iguanas to experience an incomplete shedding condition. While daily misting aids the shedding process, some iguanas may require warm water baths and massage sessions to remove old debris. Be a Wildlife Supporter and ...

SAW A SNAKE? WHO DO YOU CALL? IS THERE A NEED TO CALL? Thank you to many individuals who wrote in to us regarding the python on a lamp post at Bukit Batok. Some of you may have read our views online too (https://tinyurl.com/yabfaw4t). We are currently working with the town council to raise awareness among the residents on wildlife encounters. Reticulated pythons are one of the commonly sighted native reptiles in Singapore who feed mainly on rodents. Despite their potential growth size, th...

PROHIBITED SPECIES KEPT IN A FARM Based on a tip-off received by our ACIU (Animal Crime Investigation Unit), our investigations revealed a farm in Lim Chu Kang housing several turtles of prohibited species, including pig-nosed turtles and pond turtles, who were also housed in sub-optimal conditions. The findings were handed over to the AVA for enforcement action. We would like to thank the informant for blowing the whistle and also the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) for t...

HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD BE A WILDLIFE SUPPORTER FOR THE TURTLES More than 35 turtles have made ACRES their home away from home, having been rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Most are pig-nosed turtles who are native to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Australia and are hunted for their meat, eggs or the pet trade. Their food alone costs $5,000 every month, aside from medical expenses and manpower. We need your help to fund their sustenance, so be a Wildlife Supporter today. These turtles...

SKITTLES, THE RETIC IN A BASKET Went in to check for items to recycle? Wanted the shoe or the box or the carton? We would never know as Skittles doesn’t speak the language we understand - we only can guess that he could have taken that spot, awaiting a rodent meal to come by. However, we are very thankful to the understanding and patient caller who called us and waited for our arrival! Skittles was safely rescued by our officers Carmen and Lester for relocation. Reticulated pythons are o...
