What The Cluck?. Like Some Of Us, He Was Angry At ..
23rd Sep 2019, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

WHAT THE CLUCK? Like some of us, he was angry at first at his own reflection. Like many of us, he likes to check himself out in the mirror (sometimes for up to an hour). Like many of us, he loves his food! Like a few of us, he often doesn’t get along with his neighbour roosters. Like many of us, he gets curious when there is a new chick in the block. Like all of us, he can feel pain. Like all of us, he just wants to live safely. Kannamma is one of our rescued roosters who was found by...

17th Sep 2019, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

BIRD REHABILITATION AT ACRES This little zebra dove couldn't be reunited with his parents, so he's getting the warmth he needs from our incubators as he should from his nest. As he and other nestlings grow bigger, they are transitioned to large cages where they learn to feed before graduating to the aviary- a home to fruit-bearing plants to benefit frugivorous birds and a training ground for full independence! As a charity organisation with limited resources, we strive to make the best of ou...

Standing Up For Animals. Or Climbing. Sometimes We..
16th Sep 2019, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

STANDING UP FOR ANIMALS Or climbing. Sometimes we swim or lay prone on our tummies. Our wildlife rescue officers do their best they can at work. Our entire team battles hard to campaign for animal protection in Singapore: for the illegal wildlife trade, for enabling policy changes at the grassroots level, to be empowered in our own capacity as a collective individual. You see, for the staff and the volunteers, it’s neither about the money nor the fame. Like you, our supporters and callers ...

Turtle Soup For The Soul? Think Again. Turtlesoup ..
13th Sep 2019, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

(TURTLE) SOUP FOR THE SOUL? THINK AGAIN! Turtle soup is a delicacy in many parts of Asia, consumed for its speculated nutritional value and anti-aging properties. Live soft-shelled turtles are sold legally for the meat trade in Singapore however, the methods of procurement and housing of these live turtles are highly questionable. Rafael, an Asiatic soft-shelled turtle, was found by the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) and subsequently sent to the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre. Rafael arrived ...

Poaching Of Wild Birds In Singapore. A Tip-Off Ale..
11th Sep 2019, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

POACHING OF WILD BIRDS IN SINGAPORE A tip-off alerted us to the illegal trapping of wild birds at 708 Yishun Avenue 5. The ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) visited the area and found an active bird trap placed among other birds in cages that were hung on a tree. Thanks to the informant and the National Parks Board (Nparks), the trap has since been removed and no further poaching activities were observed during our monitoring. The ACIU has handled around 50 cases last year, specifi...

Iguana Awareness Day. Shangria, Once Kept As An Il..
8th Sep 2019, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

IGUANA AWARENESS DAY Shangria, once kept as an illegal pet, stands magnificently as she gets weighed by our animal caregivers. These pre-historic looking herbivores, although non-native to Singapore, are found in some of Singapore's green spaces, often illegally released by their owners. In some countries, released pet green iguanas are considered pests whose population is managed by removal and culling because of damage to gardens. Please say no to the illegal wildlife trade! #IguanaAwa...

SO-FISH-TICATED SENTIENCE It is not uncommon for us to find fallen bags of #ornamentalfish in Sungei Tengah. That brings us to this gentle reminder on fish and their sentience, which is often overlooked even though fish are traded in huge numbers for food and ornamental keeping. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/fish- sentient-animals-friends-positive-emotions-study-s tudy-source-ethics-eating-pescaterians-vegans-a766 0756.html “It would be a good thing if these kinds of results...

So Far From Home. Barni And Queen B Were Fortunate..
31st Aug 2019, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

SO FAR FROM HOME Barni and Queen B were fortunate to be back in their homeland in Malaysia. Unfortunately, Ernie, another giant Asian pond turtle like Queen B, was not scheduled for the trip home because of a shell deformity. Unable to fully retract her head, Ernie becomes vulnerable to predation, and so the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre will be her permanent sanctuary – her home away from home. You can help Ernie and other turtles by being a Wildlife Supporter. Food for the animals in our c...

As you read this post, Barni and Queen B await at the Malaysian checkpoint to complete the necessary documentation for their final release into the wild, thanks to the support of National Parks Board and Perhilitan. Malaysian giant turtles like Barni, the largest freshwater turtle species in South-east Asia, are endangered on the IUCN list. Threats faced by Malaysian giant turtles and giant Asian pond turtles, like Queen B, include the meat trade, demand in traditional Chinese medicine and the i...
