Spotlight on: Indian Star Tortoise
At the AWRC we look after over 35 Indian star tortoises, all rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. These little tortoises are certainly big on personality!
Here are some interesting facts about these little stars:
Females are generally larger than males, with bumpier shells.
The star-like pattern on their shells looks very pretty, but did you know it plays a very important role in their survival? The pattern actually breaks up the hard lines of ...

"When I grow up I want to help animals- ALL the animals!" It was fantastic to hear that from a little girl at Woodland's Ring Primary School Science Carnival, where we were yesterday with our roadshow.
These past couple of days we’ve also been speaking up for the animals at Soch’s “Be the change” exposition, at NIE's Green Bazaar and at the GINSing conference at SAS.
This weekend is just as busy, with talks and roadshows at the GINSing conference at UWCSEA East, and at AVA’s Re...

Meet Peanut!
Despite his name, at 35.5cm in length Peanut is actually the largest tortoise at the AWRC. He’s a fully-grown red-footed tortoise- a species native to South America- rescued just over 4 months ago. So, why the name? Well, we think his shell is shaped a bit like a peanut!
Peanut loves to sit in his water dish for most of the day, and we are looking forward to letting him explore his new 5 x 10m enclosure once it’s ready.

When size matters!
We’ve been busy with the tape measures, measuring up the rescued tortoises at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre to see who can go where in the outdoor enclosures we’re preparing for them. We want them to feel as comfortable as possible!
Can you guess the sizes of our smallest and biggest tortoises? Meet little and large: Peanut and Tiny Tot!
Tiny Tot is one of the many star tortoises at the AWRC. Their pretty shells make them popular as pets, but they are not suit...

Here's a great introduction to some of the amazing creatures that we share our island home with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lQ0_fJ_Mv0 This video was made by local wildlife enthusiasts David Tan, Eunice Soh and Jocelyne Sze.
We're busy organising an upcoming roadshow all about Singapore's native wild animals. More updates about this event...

Jas The Monitor Lizard 2nd Nov 2012, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
A rescue story with a happy ending to end the week with: Jas the monitor lizard.
Fishing hooks are not only harmful to fish. They can also cause a lot of damage and suffering to other wild animals. We were recently called on to rescue a young monitor lizard, found with a fishing hook painfully lodged deep inside his throat. Poor Jas, as we named him, required surgery to remove the hook.
Thankfully, Jas has recovered well under the care of the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre team, and has now been...

Makes you think, doesn’t it? About what life for a captive dolphin must be like, compared to the life that they were designed for.
This eye-catching ad was designed by Michael Chin, a 3rd year undergraduate advertising student. Michael took time out from his studies to work on the ad, to open people’s eyes to the plight of the wild-caught dolphins who are destined for a lifetime in captivity at Resorts World. Thank you, Michael!

Thank you Zimmer!
The animals received a wonderful gift this month- a $10,000 donation from Zimmer Pte. Ltd. and their staff! The main focus of the fundraising effort was a charity walk, which saw staff members blazing a trail from Hort Park to Mount Faber on a rainy day- all for the animals. For every person who signed up for the walk, Zimmer very kindly donated $100 to ACRES. In addition, for those who wished to participate in the walk but were unable and/or those who wanted to make a perso...

Spotlight on: INDO-PACIFIC BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN
Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins are truly fascinating animals, displaying some of the most complex social behaviours seen in non-human animals, as revealed by long-term studies on wild populations.
These dolphins are also known to use tools: wild individuals have been observed carrying sponges on their beaks to protect them from sea urchin spines while foraging on the sea floor!
Unfortunately, we don't have a photo of a wild dolphin to shar...

HELP MAKE SINGAPORE FUR-FREE!
Fur is one cruel fashion statement we can do without. Yet even in sunny Singapore we see fur on sale, mainly in the form of fur trims on clothing, boots and bags, or winter clothing. It also finds its way onto keychains, hairbands, trinkets and pet toys.
ACRES is supporting a new campaign by the Change for Animals Foundation, who are hoping to end the sale of fur in Singapore.
Find out how you can help make Singapore fur-free here: http://www.acres.org.sg/c...
