Why do we call some animals food and others "pets" and treat them so differently? Why are so many people in uproar about horse meat being found in meat products and the fact they may have eaten horse, yet they do not think twice about eating other animals? This post has some links to some interesting articles on the issue. Something to think about this Veggie Thursday!

Captain Hook is the biggest pig-nosed turtle housed at the AWRC. He came to live here after members of NParks alerted us to a turtle with fishing line hanging out of his mouth in a public pond at East Coast Park.
The ACRES Wildlife Rescue Team went to take a look and discovered a pig-nosed turtle - a non-native species. We brought him back to the Wildlife Hospital at the AWRC to take a proper look at him, and upon endoscopic examination we found a fishing hook lodg...

This poor, frightened colugo was found being illegally sold as a pet here in Singapore. Somebody felt sorry for him, bought him and handed him to ACRES. Once we were sure he was healthy, he was released back into the wild.
Unfortunately, some people think that colugos make suitable pets. This couldn't be further from the truth. Like all wild animals, colugos should be left in the wild- we can never give them what they need in our homes.
If you see a wild animal being illegally sold as a p...

What have you done for animals today? Hamish Campbell and his friends at UWCSEA decided to do something to speak up for the dolphins being held captive at Resorts World Sentosa. They created their own petition, pledging their support to the Save the World's Saddest Dolphins campaign (www.saddestdolphins.com) by signing their names. Their names join those of hundreds of thousands of people around the world who are calling for Resorts World to do the right thing. Thank you Hamish, and everyone who...

Members of UWCSEA's PAW (Promoting Animal Welfare) group came up with this creative way to raise funds for the ACRES Lao Wildlife Sanctuary! At the school's Community Fair yesterday, they kept children entertained with colouring-in activities, while their parents explored the Fair in peace, in return for a donation! Result: Happy parents, happy kids, and money raised for the wildlife sanctuary- a great result all round!
Thank you to all members of PAW, and to everyone who made a donation!

Neung Gets Busy! 23rd Feb 2013, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
Animals in captivity quickly become bored, so it’s important to give them different things to do several times a day, every day, to make their lives as interesting as they can be. Our animal caregivers at the ACRES Lao Wildlife Sanctuary have been busy coming up with ways to keep Neung, the rescued young bear, busy and stimulated and encourage her to exercise and explore her natural behaviours. As you can see from these pictures, Neung has been having a whale of a time trying out her new enr...

Beautiful story about the sentience of cows. Sometimes we forget that animals that we call "food" are sentient beings (in the same way that animals we call "pets" are). We can help make a better world for them by becoming vegetarian or at least cutting down on our meat consumption.
Today is Veggie Thursday in Singapore- join the growing movement and make today meat-free and animal-friendly!

Woah, this is a big turtle. Can you guess how heavy he is? :)
The big boy featured here is Newton. He is a common snapping turtle: a freshwater species with amazingly powerful jaws and strong shells. Unfortunately, these have not protected him from becoming caught up in the illegal pet trade.
Newton was found wandering on Serangoon Road, abandoned and suffering from multiple abrasion wounds. Handling a snapping turtle every day for treatment procedures is not an ...
