As for cages themselves, an ordinary citizen who kept dogs in similar conditions for their entire lives would risk prosecution for cruelty. A pig producer who keeps an animal of comparable intelligence in this manner, however, is more likely to be rewarded with a tax concession or, in some countries, a direct government subsidy.

Rachel (being hugged in the photo), an Assamese macaque, arrived at ACRES Lao Wildlife Sanctuary 6 months ago. She was rescued from the wildlife trade and her mother was most likely killed. In 2011, we were looking for suitable substrates for our indoor quarantine enclosures, particularly for tortoises rescued from the illegal pet trade in Singapore. Almost 2 years ago we met this stump tailed macaque in Laos and promised her a better life. It has taken years of work, tears and sweat but we finally delivered on our promise. This week, for the first time, she felt what it was like to touch grass and see the sky. She unfortunately can’t be released into the wild yet, but at least she and her 3 friends now have a much better life.
