The ACRES Lao volunteer programme is raising awareness about animal welfare among local kids too. Over in ACRES Lao PDR, our volunteer programme is gathering momentum. Last week we welcomed 40 (yes, that's right four-zero) students from Vientiane College, who came to volunteer as part of their 'Community Service' course. The students are all on the American Access course run by the US Embassy in Lao and for many of them it was the first time they had been to the Sanctuary and seen such animal...

Among all the turtle and tortoise residents of ACRES, the mention of Common snapping turtles always seems to strike fear in visitors due to their powerful large jaws and ability to snap at their prey. But these ancient looking turtles share many more fascinating attributes. Here we have a close up shot of "Newton", our Common snapping turtle attempting to tear apart an enrichment. Common snapping turtles have existed on Earth for millions of years and shared the rivers with dinosaurs. They hav...

Your "DAIRY" read :) To keep producing milk for human consumption, a dairy cow must produce a calf each year. Calves are taken from their mothers within 12-24 hours of birth. Mother cows, like most mammals have a strong maternal bond. When calves are removed, mother cows will frantically bellow for the offspring that they will never see again.

Suzzie was taken in for an x-ray check last week. There are still some gaps in between her bones but the good news is, they are fusing back with the help of the 2 pins. As Suzzie gets stronger each week, the Macaque Team implemented changes into her 'home'. New puzzle feeders were given and she has been utilizing them well. The branches have also been raised higher to allow her to climb and stretch her muscles better. Interestingly, now that the branches have been raised, it gave an added '2 st...

The animals at ACRES are enjoying their outdoor enclosures now because of all of you!! Whether you have donated your time or money, ACRES would like to take time out to appreciate all of you who have supported us over the years. We have the passion to do what we do, but this is of course impossible without all of your help. We hope you will continue to support us, and at the same time, help spread the word about what we do! Return Of The Rescue Van
1st Mar 2014, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

It has been almost a month, since our rescue vehicle went for some major repairs. In a day (and night), we spend about ten hours on the roads, responding to a variety of cases. The rescue officers (both staff and volunteers) spend a lot of time using the van: handling calls, discussing plans of action, moving equipment in and out, and sometimes even deciding on a quick stop for a drink or snack. In short, we kind of missed our van and glad that the vehicle is back in action (at the cost of up to...

What a great weekend this is turning out to be (although the rain has been sorely missed)!! On this lovely Saturday evening, ACRES would like to appeal to our supporters to help spread the word about some design work we need help with. Our merchandise is in the midst of a huge revamp, and we need help with some fresh new exciting designs for our ACRES t-shirts, mugs, car decals and some others. As you might already know, all proceeds from sale of merchandise goes to helping the animals, so if yo...

A few days ago, the ACRES rescue team rescued 2 young civet cats which were trapped in a rat trap by accident. They were released into the wooded area next to the site because their mother would usually stay nearby. The Common Palm Civets are also known as Toddy Cats. The name came about because this creature was apparently fond of drinking from vessels put in palm trees to collect sap for making toddy or palm sugar. It has a distinct musky odour when harassed. The odour has been likened to fr...

It is always a privilege when people are willing to give us the opportunity to talk about animal welfare issues. We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every of you who has taken the first step in instilling compassion into your daily lives. It does not cost you a single cent to be compassionate and to show empathy. Have you ever given a thought about where your bacon comes from or how your leather bag was made or how your eye lash extensions came about? There are many small...

For this week's post on animal care, we would like to share a Sunday project we did with Alex, our volunteer. We had an unused coffee table and decided to turn it into a shelter and climbing platform for our Indian star tortoises, we also had some scrap PVC pipes lying that we used to hang enrichments. Upcycling/reusing unwanted products is a fun and creative way to provide our animals with good environment to live in. The project took just about 2 hours to complete and it has been providing ou...

Suzzie - 7th week of rehabilitation After pulling through the intensive and complicated operation, Suzzie has been showing consistent progress, balancing herself with a temporary missing limb. Bandage change needs to be done daily and we can tell how fast Suzzie is growing judging from her strength. She is beginning to outgrow her baby teeth (we can feel them sinking in through the gloves when we hold her!) . Puzzle feeders, mirrors, auditory and visual enrichments were provided to ensure that ...

5 ways to have an Animal-Friendly holiday! • Never take your photo with a wild animal. • Don’t visit places with circus-style animal shows. • Avoid all other forms of animal exploitation, such as animal rides, bloodsports (e.g. cock fighting), live animal markets etc. • Speak up! Tell your tour operator why you won’t visit places that exploit animals. • Make sure any souvenirs you buy do not contain animal parts.
