HELP MACAQUES: DON’T FEED THEM! Singapore’s charismatic macaques are a big hit with the public, who often cannot resist feeding them potato chips, popcorn and other snacks. But, did you know that feeding them causes a lot more harm than good? Feeding macaques: - Causes rapid and unnatural growth of the macaque population. - Results in the macaques being attracted to residential areas and areas popular with visitors. - Causes the macaques to lose their natural fear of humans and vehicles and ...

Our Savannah Monitor Lizard's New Enclosure
20th Jan 2015, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

In April 2014, we shared a video which showed Adisa, our savannah monitor lizard's enclosure. However, we felt that her cage enclosure's vertical space did not suit it as Savannah monitor lizards are known to be primarily ground dwelling animals. We have currently changed her enclosure which has more horizontal space as opposed to vertical. Now she has more space to stretch out and walk around then before. The old video can be viewed at: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=101520889048 71523&s...

Last week the ACRES Macaque Team attended to a case which ended with a miraculous twist! They were alerted of a dehydrated lone young macaque with an open wound on its back and chest region in Bishan park by a post in the Nature Society Singapore facebook page. The wound needed urgent medical help to prevent the spread of infection as the lone macaque did not have a troop to assist. With the help from the public who contacted the ACRES 24-Hour Wildlife Rescue hotline, the team managed to trek...

Today on our #ACRESthanksyou Sunday, we thank the people that you least expected... Our Ministry of the Environment & Water Resources, together with PUB and NEA! They have now included in their 'Best practices for events' article to 'avoid controversial dishes featuring endangered animals'! It is definitely a huge leap for Singapore and for all animals, and a sign we are slowly but surely accepting that animals should be given a voice too. So.. THANK YOU for remembering our friends! Do take a l...

If only they knew... That ferocious look was made out of fear, That magnificent pace meant nothing but anxiety, That a majestic being was lost on the day it left the forest, Would there still be smiles on their faces? Despite some good conservation efforts by a meagre number of facilities that hold wild animals captive, it is an undeniable fact that millions and millions of these amazing creatures would lose their true identity to the thriving captive wild animal industry, just so that we could...

Snake Shed
14th Jan 2015, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

Over the last few weeks, we have been bringing some of our snakes to our outdoor tanks. These acrylic tanks are big and provide our snakes with a more spacious environment to live in. The outdoor tanks in the Snake shed also lets us educate visitors about the illegal wildlife trade and how snakes fall victim to the cruel trade. The big tanks also give us more options in terms of the substrate we provide. However, these tanks are space consuming and we do not have enough space to accommodate all...

Caramel at 4 weeks old. Long-tailed macaque mothers are the primary caregivers of their newborn infants and are very protective of them, not allowing infants out of their grasp. Did you know? Let's go all cattle today! Animals are capable of so much more compassion, love, bravery, and ingenuity than most people realize. We want to be together: Cows have best friends within their herds and become stressed if separated, a study has found! So let's ask ourselves. Is having close friends forming a bond essential to our own well being, someone who understands what we go through. If yes, then we aren't that different then too aren't we? Have an awesome new week dear frie...

It is a beautiful evening, and we want to make it sweeter - by thanking a very thoughtful person: Victoria Lamb and family. It was just a usual day for our rescue team, but Victoria decided to make it much more special with a thank you card that's specially made by the hardworking ladies in Kibera. It is extremely heart-warming to receive love from our supporters, and it takes the cake that someone else benefited from it too, other than us. So a big HUG and THANK YOU Victoria! You've made our da...
