KEEP THEM WILD AND FREE: LEOPARD CAT
The leopard cat is found throughout Asia, including in Singapore, where it is very rare and believed to be the only wild cat species left. Wild cats have been observed on Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong in recent years, but have not been sighted alive on the mainland since 1968, although roadkills were seen in 2001 and 2007.
Unfortunately, this precious cat has become yet another victim of the exotic pet trade.
It is illegal to keep leopard cats as pets in S...

UPDATES: MIKEY THE TETHERED DOG
I have personally met with the owners of Mikey and I'm pleased to inform everyone that they have agreed to no longer tether Mikey.
They are also going to build an outdoor yard for Mikey and construction will start next week. The owners will also look into getting him sterilised.
I managed to spend some time playing with Mikey today as well!
Thank you to the owners for meeting with me and thanks to Shannon for his help too.
Thank you to those who wrote to m...

ART FOR A GOOD CAUSE!
Did you know that art has been used as a therapy for people suffering from various disorders and illnesses, such as depression and dementia? If art can be a medicine for humans, why can’t it be for animals as well?
The Art Club of Zhonghua Secondary School is putting their kind intentions to action, taking the first step forward by visiting us at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre on the 6th of March! They have gained more knowledge and understanding of our precious nativ...

OUR WILD NEIGHBOURS: DUGONG
Once they were the legendary mermaids of the ocean.
Meet the graceful dugongs (Dugong dugon).
Another name for these aquatic herbivores is the ‘sea cow’, as they feed on a diet of vegetation - mainly seagrass - at a rate of up to 50kg a day.
Dugongs do not have fins, which easily distinguishes them from other marine mammals, especially the dolphin, despite being similar in size and shape to some degree.
Dugongs love the warm shallow waters, and if you are lu...

SMILE! ALIEN AND HERSHEY STRIKE A POSE
A few weeks ago, we introduced Alien - a Hermann’s tortoise – to another tortoise, Hershey. Despite the size difference, Alien was not pleased by Hershey’s presence and started to show territorial behaviour by shell-ramming Hershey. Alien has since calmed down and learnt to co-exist with Hershey.
Here they can be seen ‘posing’ for a photo whilst enjoying their daily feed of greens!
The Hermann’s tortoise is native to Southern Europe, where t...

FIRST MACAQUE INTEGRATION PRIOR TO RELEASE
Bike and Rossa were rescued on different days in February, during the Chinese New Year period. This was the first time that ACRES has rescued two macaques within such a short space of time. Unlike the previous times when we have rehabilitated single macaques prior to release, their story has an interesting twist. From perfect strangers, Bike and Rossa appear to have become good friends during their rehabilitation process!
Whilst we do know Bike’s fa...

EVER WONDERED ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF VOLUNTEERING?
The word “volunteer” originates from the old French word “voluntaire” (now volontaire). The volunteering service began in C.1600, when people offered themselves for military service.
The idea of volunteering grew significantly in the 19th Century, and continues to gather support worldwide. Volunteering is now recognised all over the world, and most countries include voluntary service in their education system as “service learning” or ...

GARNET IS ON THE MEND!
We just wanted to share with you one of the happy moments here at ACRES!
Do you remember Garnet, the tiny African spurred tortoise? He’s one of the animals you raised funds for so that he gets a new enclosure while he recovers.
This is a short video of him finally eating! He worried us when he stopped eating for a while (many rescued animals suffer from poor appetite as a result of their abandonment ordeal and ill-health), but thankfully he has started again! We do ...

KEEP THEM WILD AND FREE: STAR TORTOISE
This is the second segment of our series on the illegal keeping of wild animals as exotic pets in Singapore.
Indian star tortoises are coveted as pets because of the attractive star-like patterns on their shells. They may grow up to 15 inches in length and weigh up to 7 kg. They are at risk of becoming extinct in the wild if the trade in individuals captured from the wild to be sold as pets continues.
ACRES has rescued scores of Indian star tortoises f...

BUBA IS SAFELY BACK IN THE WILD!
Enjoy this short video showing BuBa, a Malayan colugo, going back home to the wild after his/her rescue: back to where he/she truly belongs. BuBa got stranded amongst potted plants at a residence adjacent to a nature area. Colugos are good gliders, but they do sometimes land somewhere inappropriate and strand themselves, especially in built-up areas. Thanks to the family who called our Hotline, BuBa was given that little bit of help that he needed by our wildlif...
