SAVE MARINE ANIMALS: BIN THAT LITTER
Whilst roaming through the beautiful waters of the Southern Islands by boat, we passed a section of the sea filled with rubbish. It seemed as if the waves were trying to get rid to the litter by ‘sweeping’ the litter into one area, only to realise it can’t actually get rid of the mess. It was a truly sad sight.
Many marine animals are affected and killed by our harmful action of littering: they choke on or ingest hazardous items; they get trapped and ...

MEET MILK, THE LATEST INDIAN STAR TORTOISE TO BE RESCUED BY ACRES
Milk was rescued after being abandoned at a vet clinic. She was apparently kept illegally as a pet for about eight years, and then the owners decided they that didn’t want her any longer. The fact that she has an abscess on her face could have been one factor in the owners abandoning her: because they didn’t want to pay the vet bills. Indian star tortoises do not make good pets and are difficult to take care of. They also req...

THE LESSER KNOWN SIDE OF ALPHA MALE MACAQUES
They’re often seen as the strict, hostile, watchful and defensive ones. There is a need for these highly misunderstood leaders to display such characteristics, as they have an important role to play for their family. They need to protect their family from any possible threat. They need to lead their family well, as their family’s safety is in their hands. They need to also uphold their position as an alpha male. Hence, they create this impression...

ARE NATURE RESERVES IMPORTANT TO YOU?
71% of Singaporeans say that nature reserves are important to them, in a survey commissioned by ACRES and conducted independently by Millward Brown early this year.
Although of Singapore’s 707 sq km only 0.25% comprises nature reserves, Singapore is still home to a wonderfully rich biodiversity. These nature reserves are home to more than half of our 3,196 recorded native animal species.
Sadly, 77% of Singapore’s wild animal species are threatened, ...

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE: SCAR HAS A SMOOTH JOURNEY HOME!
Scar is an Asiatic soft-shelled turtle who was found along Changi beach in April 2015. Asiatic soft-shelled turtles are a native freshwater species and are not known to cope well in the marine environment. We would like to thank the NParks officers at Changi beach for calling us to help the stranded turtle. Scar had severely infected, bleeding wounds on her neck, top and bottom shell at the time of rescue.
Scar was kept under critical c...

EVER WONDERED WHAT A TORTOISE LOOKS LIKE ON THE INSIDE?
Wonder no more!
Here’s an X-ray image of one of the rescued Indian star tortoises in our care, courtesy of The Pet Doctors Clinic. At ACRES, we regularly order X-rays of the rescued animals to ensure that they are healthy and do not have any hidden health issues. In this case, if you look at the image closely, you will notice a cluster of four eggs. Many of the female tortoises will produce unfertilised eggs from time to time.

WOUND HEALING IN MACAQUES
Human wounds tend to gape and generally take a long time to heal. In contrast, strong anecdotal evidence indicates that the wounds of non-human primates heal faster than human wounds. For example, it is said that chimpanzees “heal overnight”, both in captivity and in the wild. The mechanism of this apparent difference is unknown.
Scientists have recently recorded animals performing actions that unquestionably look like self-medicating. If wild animals are self-m...
