CARLOS MEETS WOLVERINE! SO FAR, SO GOOD… Back in 2012, we rescued a Cuban slider for the first time: Carlos. Carlos had suffered substantial injuries to his shell. We managed to put his shell back together with epoxy and, with daily cleaning and lots of care, he recovered well. Carlos later joined Markos, another Cuban slider, outdoors at our Main Sanctuary Area. However, Markos has always been aggressive towards to Carlos, approaching Carlos to bite him immediately. Unfortunately, we needed ...

MONKEY SLEEP, MONKEY DO: HOW MACAQUES CHOOSE THEIR TREES Macaques have many sleeping sites. Two extensive studies of Indonesian primates suggest that factors regarding which tree to select each evening are site-specific and different for each species—and that some overnight spots result in conflicts between monkeys and humans. "We have to understand what monkeys need in order to sleep to know what we have to protect," said primate scientist Fany Brotcorne of the University of Liège in Bel...

EVERYDAY HEROES FOR WILDLIFE! We’re very grateful to several members of the public who have helped raise awareness among their own community about our native wild animals and how to protect them. Today, we’d like to express our heartfelt thanks to two of our long-term rescue volunteers - Alpana Ahuja and Chuen Ling Lee – who, as well as assisting with our hands-on rescue work, have also been helping ACRES and the animals in their own ways. Here are two examples of the two ladies helping...

The Balloons You So Casually Release Into The Sky Are Killing Animals
2nd Jul 2015, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

STOP RELEASING BALLOONS INTO THE SKY! It’s something that people do all over the world, often in celebration or as a symbolic gesture. But have you ever wondered where the balloons go after they are released? Unfortunately, they often end up in the sea, where birds, turtles, and other animals commonly mistake the balloons for food and consume them, with deadly consequences. That’s right: balloon releases kill wildlife. Please think of alternative, animal-friendly ways to make a stateme...

THE RACE HAS JUST GOT TOUGHER Just when her training was going well, disaster struck for Sabrina, our Campaigns Executive, who is running the Sundown Marathon for the animals this coming Saturday. While attending to an injured long-tailed macaque on a rainy day, she slipped and fell into a drain, dislocating her elbow. Thankfully, doctors managed to realign her elbow, but she was not allowed to train anymore. It’s just 4 more days to the race, but Sabrina is still willing to push on and c...

EGGS GALORE! Over the past week, many eggs have been found inside the enclosures of the rescued female Indian star tortoises at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC). This photo shows one such site where a tortoise dug a hole and laid her eggs. It is not uncommon for female tortoises to lay eggs. These are, however, unfertilised eggs. Previously, when the tortoises were housed indoors, we had to provide the female tortoises with sand trays in which they could lay their eggs. Sometimes, when...

Humans Are Not The Only Animals With A Sense Of Self, New Study Claims
30th Jun 2015, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

SELF-AWARENESS IN NON-HUMAN ANIMALS Many of us who have lived with, worked with, or simply observed non-human animals believe that many species are self-aware. But what about the scientific evidence? A recent study into self-awareness in non-human animals suggests that many animals are self-aware, with neural evidence that animals can project themselves into the future indicating that they must have a sense of self. This could have important implications in the field of animal welfare.

LET MACAQUES TEACH YOU HOW TO EAT AND RUN! You may have seen hamsters storing food in their cheek pouches. Did you know that long-tailed macaques do the same? Macaques possess adaptive features which help them survive and thrive in the wild. They have cheek pouches, which are handy tools that grow larger in order to accommodate food. The function of these pouches is to keep food safe for brief periods of time – usually as long as it takes for a macaque to get from one place to another. The ...

THE UNSUNG HEROES OF OUR BIRTHDAY BASH Today, we’d like to thank the trio that were quietly working in the background while we were enjoying the night of our 14th Anniversary Gala Dinner last month: Our cool technical and sound man for the night, Ahmad Ridhwan; our event organiser extraordinaire, Rahayu Rahni; and our quirky emcee, Melvin Ho! These three talented individuals very kindly gave their best for our Gala Dinner, and they didn’t ask for anything in return; just the knowledge that...

HERE COMES THE FESTIVAL OF BIODIVERSITY! ARE YOU IN? Exactly how wild can Singapore be? You might be surprised at the rich variety of native wild animals that are still residing on our tropical island. Our ACRES Wildlife Rescue Team has encountered a fair share of the incredible wild animals of Singapura, but these represent merely a small fraction of our great biodiversity! Since the start of our native wildlife rescue operations back in 2009, we’ve rejoiced every single time when a rescued...
