26th Aug 2015, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

DOLPHIN TRIVIA: MORE ABOUT DOLPHIN FEEDING STRATEGIES Last week we discussed the use of “mud nets” by dolphins to catch their prey. Did you know that another clever feeding strategy used by dolphins is the use of sea sponges as tools? Dolphins have been observed putting sponges on their rostra, or beaks, to protect against abrasion while they comb through the seafloor for prey. The first ever dolphin who was observed with such behaviour was nicknamed “Sponging Eve”! Read more here: htt...

CAN MACAQUES SWIM? Long-tailed macaques are excellent swimmers, and this may be a predator avoidance technique - if they are threatened, they can escape by simply dropping into the water and swimming to safety. Predators of long-tailed macaques include pythons, monitor lizards, raptors, large cats, and, in some areas, feral dogs. Swimming is a common activity for long-tailed macaques. Hanging out in mangrove swamps, macaques search and dive for crabs and other crustaceans. They also swim to en...

SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT – BIRDS ENTERING YOUR PREMISES? HERE'S HOW SOMEONE TRIED TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE The sight of birds can be exciting and therapeutic to most. But to some, birds are an annoyance. Recently, a member of the public was annoyed with birds who flew into his flat to eat his food. In order to ‘teach the birds a lesson’, he caught one bird and - with a thin string - tied its legs to a pole which he hung outside the window. The highly distressed bird was filmed frantically struggl...
