SAVING TWO MACAQUES IN ONE DAY 7th Sep 2015, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
SAVING TWO MACAQUES IN ONE DAY
Rescuing macaques doesn’t happen on a regular basis here in Singapore, because these primates are extremely hardy and usually have the capability to recover from injuries naturally – as long they are with their family. However, in some instances, human intervention is needed. This is especially true in cases where they are found alone, or human-inflicted cruelty is involved.
Mia was rescued by ACRES two years ago after having suffered a ruptured pelvis from a...

COLLIERS INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERING DAY AT ACRES!
It’s been a while since the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) opened in 2009 and, not surprisingly, over time the buildings have lost a bit of their sparkle and shine!
For a while now we’ve wanted to give the Wildlife Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre (where rescued animals receive veterinary care and undergo their quarantine period) a bit of a facelift and refurbish the building, and we finally got the opportunity recently when 41 volun...

SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT – SG$1000 SQUIRREL FOR SALE?
Recently, a member of the public alleged that a pet shop was selling a squirrel for SG$1000! The squirrel was believed to have fallen from a nearby tree, then was caught by the shopkeeper and put up for sale.
An investigator from the ACRES Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) investigated the allegation, and verified that the squirrel was being kept in a bird cage mounted on a wall at the said shop, and could possibly be for sale. There was barel...

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE ROUNDUP: 04 SEPTEMBER 2015
1. This little starling was disorientated, grounded and was unable to fly. Perhaps he flew into a wall/glass panel; we don’t know for sure. The caller in this case was extremely helpful, making sure the starling could rest in a quiet environment until we arrived. Thankfully, the starling didn’t suffer any injuries and flew away after some rest. Our heartfelt thanks to the caller for helping the bird!
2. Lori is an adult nightjar who became ...

DOLPHIN RESEARCH UPDATES
Since launching the dolphin sightings hotline in May, we’ve received 7 calls from members of the public, and there was even a sighting of a mother dolphin with her calf! We’re very happy to announce that we will be out at sea again very soon. This has all been made possible because of those who donated to our pioneering dolphin research project.
Since we launched the project in April, we’ve been trying to secure funds to jumpstart the study on wild dolphins in S...

THE AWRC KITCHEN GETS A FRESH DOSE OF PAINT AND A REVAMP!
The ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre kitchen is where we prepare all of the food for the rescued wild animals in our care. After many years of use, we decided to give it a new lease of life by giving it a new colour! Wildlife Rescue Officer Syabrina , together with dedicated volunteers from Colliers International, stripped down the kitchen, scraped and cleaned the walls, and finally slapped on a new coat of paint. While this was happening, v...

DEFU GREETS HOME ONCE AGAIN!
Three months ago, Defu, a pig-tailed macaque, was rescued from a car workshop following a tip-off to ACRES from a member of the public. It is illegal to keep primates as pets in Singapore. Pig-tailed macaque are not native to Singapore, and can be found living wild in India, China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia. There is only one species of macaque found in Singapore: the long-tailed macaque.
Kept in a small cage, Defu...

SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT – DID YOU KNOW? ENDANGERED PIG – NOSED TURTLES ARE STILL BEING SOLD AT FARMS IN SINGAPORE!
Native to Papua New Guinea, these fresh water turtles are known for their pig-like nose. Pig-nosed turtles are shy towards humans; however, they tend to be aggressive and highly territorial towards others of their kind.
Sadly, pig-nosed turtles are in high demand internationally as exotic pets, and for traditional medicine purposes and for their meat. This high demand has driven...

IT DOESN’T ALWAYS HAVE TO COME FROM THE ADULTS
Vygotsky (founder of the Social Development Theory, 1978) says that the environment in which children grow up will influence how they think and what they think about. Social interactions with their partners help them to construct knowledge.
The P3 and P4 student leaders of Maris Stella High (Pri) visited the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre this month, with the purpose of learning more about Singapore’s native wildlife and how everyone can play a ...
