ACRES Wildlife Rescue: Rescue Video Of Shrapnel, The Reticulated Python
2nd Oct 2015, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE: RESCUE VIDEO FOR SHRAPNEL, A RETICULATED PYTHON. Last month, the ACRES Wildlife Rescue team was called upon to attend to a python in a drain. Pythons should usually be left alone in drains, but this particular python had gotten stuck in a subsoil pipe. This happens occasionally, and snakes have died in the past when the drain floods. We suspect this happens when the pipes are clogged causing a suction effect on the large surface area of the snake, making him/her stuck....

2nd Oct 2015, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

NEW INSIGHTS INTO FISH BEHAVIOUR AND SOCIAL SKILLS An important new study has shed light on the cognition and social skills of fish, with possible implications for the way that we ethically treat fish. Scientists have found that pairs of rabbitfishes will cooperate and support each other while feeding. Reciprocal cooperation, which requires an investment in a partner that is later reciprocated, is assumed to require complex cognitive and social skills - something that fishes have generally be...

MEET HAWKEYE - THE LATEST RESCUED TORTOISE GIVEN A SAFE HOME AT THE AWRC Last month, the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Team was alerted to a tortoise spotted in the Thomson area. The familiar silhouette of a tortoise greeted us when we arrived, but we weren’t sure what species he was. The markings and colouration on the face resembled those of a Hawksbill turtle, and so he was named ‘Hawkeye’. Hawkeye was eventually identified as a Sulawesi tortoise or Forsten's tortoise. This species is endang...

Did An Abused Monkey Pick Your Coconut? | All American Vegan
28th Sep 2015, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

DID AN ABUSED MACAQUE PICK YOUR COCONUT? Agile and adept climbers, macaques are native to coconut growing regions in Southeast Asia. They are capable of harvesting from 300 to 1,000 coconuts in a single day; hundreds more than a human can. Sadly, the life of a macaque trained to pick coconuts for commercial products (also often seen in “monkey shows” aimed at tourists) is often a miserable one. Coconut-picking macaques may be forced to pick coconuts day in, day out and all day long, leavi...

THE RELEASE OF MIA, VELDA AND UNIQLO After 23 days of intensive rehabilitation of three long-tailed macaques, they’ve finally greeted home once again! Rehabilitating and integrating three macaques at the same time was a first for ACRES. We are delighted that the three macaques integrated well, which aided in their recovery process. DOLPHIN DORSAL FINS ARE JUST LIKE FINGERPRINTS Did you know that dolphins each have a unique-looking dorsal fin? This is because nicks and scars caused by dominance fights, injuries (such as those inflicted by propeller collisions) or deformities are unique to each individual. For this reason, dolphin researchers aim to obtain high-resolution photos of the dorsal fin to distinguish and identify each individual. We seek your help in looking for a kind soul who is willing to donate a DSLR ca...
