We found this boy (now named Zac by his loving family) just over a year ago. Our Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) had received a call from the public and arrived on the scene to meet with a kind finder, who informed him that he had found a male Husky pup tied to a tree and subject to the elements. The finder had reason to believe that the dog belonged to a neighbour, and our ARO left a note at the alleged owner's home after getting no response, asking for the owner to contact us when he/she returned....

Dogs don't naturally enjoy being handled in certain ways, e.g. nail trims and ear cleaning. However, we can make things easier by helping them grow accustomed to being groomed. The first step of the learning process is always for your dog to form a positive and rewarding association with what it's not instinctively comfortable with.
Read http://www.cheerfuldogs.com/Documents/CheerfulDogs PositiveCERPuttingGoodIntoBad.pdf to find out more on how to put the "good" into something "bad". The art...

Born in our shelter on 1 June 2013, these six tiny babies went home with one of our loving fosterers for a good bout of dedicated care. Mommy rabbit came to us with two other rabbits, found abandoned at the lift lobby of Block 214, Lorong 8 Toa Payoh. Fortunately, she had a smooth delivery and the babies fared well under our fosterer’s care. The babies are growing strong, mommy is doing well, and they are now back in our shelter and ready for adoption. These babies are very young and will need...

Hamsters make great pets for children because they are less demanding and are fairly simple to maintain. They may be small and easy to keep, but hamsters have their special needs too! Because it's so difficult to tell the gender of a small or baby hamster, many make the mistake of placing two hamsters of opposite genders in the same cage. As hamsters are prolific breeders, the situation will soon get out of hand. Having litters of hamsters to deal with after will prove challenging. Their tendenc...

Surrendered at our shelter yesterday, these five kittens were reportedly found in a plastic bag, abandoned and left to fend for themselves. After having our consultant vet check the babies, our staff prepared the milk needed and set about feeding the hungry kittens. We sent them off today with our caring fosterers, and they'll be back at our shelter in about two months' time when they're ready to be adopted.

We received a call from a concerned member of the public who had found a small bird at a shop-house along Tiong Bahru Road. Our Animal Rescue Officer arrived on the scene and found the little fledgling, chirping away and asking for food. He brought the bird back to our shelter and we fed it some mealworms and baby bird food. Wanting to get professional advice from the wildlife experts, we contacted the good folks over at ACRES: Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Singapore), who read...

Can rabbits be litter trained? By nature, rabbits choose one or a few corners to deposit their urine and most of their poop (also known as pills). So it is possible to litter train your rabbit! Here are some tips for litter training your rabbit...
1. Sterilising your rabbit makes litter training easier.
2. Watch your rabbit closely when you let it out so you know where it does its business.
3. Get more than one litterbox when you first start litter training your rabbit. They don't have the ...

Remember her?
Our little fighter will most likely have a permanent dent around the snout area due to her extensive injuries. Nevertheless, she has healed well under our shelter staff's loving care, and is now ready for adoption! Despite the ill treatment she's experienced, this lovely girl is still as trusting as can be, eager to meet her future family. She's come a long way, and we can't wait for her to find a home she can call her own.

At less than a thousand square meters, our Animal Shelter can only house a maximum of 170 animals at any one time. Unfortunately, we take in up to 500 unwanted, abandoned or lost animals each month. We often hear the same excuse when someone surrenders their pet at our doorstep - "I have no time."
Some of the animals in our adoption area are victims of impulse buying. Others are the result of over-breeding. All of them are victims of irresponsibility.
Help us help more animals. If you're ...

Earlier this week, we received a call about a puppy who needed rescue. Imagine our Animal Rescue Officer's surprise (and horror) when he arrived on the scene. A paper bag was left at the void deck of Block 359, Yuan An Road, but this wasn't any paper bag - there was a puppy in it. Our officer immediately took the puppy out of the bag and transported her back to our shelter.
Our consultant vet checked the puppy and fortunately, she had no injuries or illnesses. This darling three-month-old gir...

We discussed and deliberated over the topics we'd most like to share with the public, and tasked them with the responsibility of creating impactful messages and campaigns. They also took on the mammoth task of suggesting angles for the education website that we're in the midst of creating, targeted at the new MOE Character and Citizenship Enrichment (CCE) syllabus.

Rabbits are fluffy and adorable, but are you certain you (or your children) are ready for one in the house? Here are some facts about rabbits that you may want to know before you make that important decision.
1. A rabbit's teeth never stops growing. To deal with tooth growth, your rabbit will chew - a lot. Watch out for wires, furniture, and other things lying about!
2. Rabbits are more aggressive when they're not sterilised. Unsterilised rabbits stomp, bite and scratch more.
3. Rabbits can...
