Adoption Spotlight: Jenga.
This lovely 8 year old girl looks like she's been through quite a bit. We found her wandering on the streets, and she came to us with a cataract in one eye and prominent teats. She may have been used as a breeding dog, and we think she deserves so much more than that. She may not be a young pup, but Jenga is certainly no less awesome or wonderful. Like most Jack Russells, Jenga appreciates her daily exercise and stimulation, and will love you for it. Are you ready t...

We all know to keep dangerous objects away from children, but it’s important to remember that we should be even more careful with our animals. Because they are smaller, more mobile and have more sensitive noses, they are more likely to investigate and get into things that can be dangerous.
Here’s the first part in a series of what to watch out for when cat-proofing your home (we’re quite sure some parts apply to other animals too!).
Household danger #1: Curtains, blinds, and electri...

We received a call about an injured community cat and our Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) arrived on the scene to find this. Near the flower bed at the void deck of Block 837 Woodlands Street 82 was an adult white and brown local cat. But this girl had an unusual injury - there was a rubber band tied around her left front leg. Our ARO brought her back to our shelter, and our consultant vet gave her a thorough check. The rubber band appears to have been wound over twice.
She may be injured, but s...

Adoption Spotlight: Guppi.
This 10-year-old Dachshund is quiet and chill (while his Toy Poodle friend, Bailey, is quite the opposite), but still eager to meet anyone new. He'll come to the front to greet you, and hang around you after for pats and attention. He wants a forever home, somewhere that he can feel safe in and spend the rest of his years with a good family. He deserves so much more and is one of the loveliest boys we've met. Are you ready to take this happy boy in and shower him wi...

This is Karl Marx, formerly known as Zack back in our shelter. Adopted by the Lim family, Zack was a really shy boy who needed lots of patience and guidance to help him get over his anxiety. He used to huddle at the back of his kennel and was really intimidated by strangers and strange noises. Under the Lim family's dedicated care, he has since found confidence and couldn't be happier. Read his happy ending here - http://www.spca.org.sg/services_adoption_happyendi ng.asp
Thank you Lim family ...

Adoption Spotlight: Yuki.
This 2 year old boy is a little shy and hangs around the back of the kennel while his two other friends (Thunder and Sau Sau) rush to the front to greet you. But don't let that turn you away, because Yuki is really a sweetheart once you get to know him. Give him time, and he'll come greet you with the same enthusiasm as his friends. He's ready for a second chance at finding a better family and wants a place he can call home, a place he can live comfortably in for the...

Why do we use food as rewards in positive reinforcement training?
A dog can have different motivators (e.g. food, play, a chance to chase something, a car ride, etc.). When a dog starts learning something new, we choose the reward that motivates the dog most in that situation. For many dogs, food is one of the strongest natural rewards. Think of it this way - when you start a new job, the strongest motivator may be the salary. As you get better in your job, your priorities may begin to shift...

We received a call today from a concerned member of the public about a rabbit, allegedly abandoned at Block 632A, Senja Road. Our Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) arrived on the scene to find a rabbit abandoned in a cage by the block's refuse bin centre. The white and brown rabbit seemed to have an injured hind leg/foot. Our ARO brought the rabbit back to our shelter.
We are appealing for any information that may lead to the identification of the person responsible for this. If you have any relev...

We found this boy (now named Zac by his loving family) just over a year ago. Our Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) had received a call from the public and arrived on the scene to meet with a kind finder, who informed him that he had found a male Husky pup tied to a tree and subject to the elements. The finder had reason to believe that the dog belonged to a neighbour, and our ARO left a note at the alleged owner's home after getting no response, asking for the owner to contact us when he/she returned....

Dogs don't naturally enjoy being handled in certain ways, e.g. nail trims and ear cleaning. However, we can make things easier by helping them grow accustomed to being groomed. The first step of the learning process is always for your dog to form a positive and rewarding association with what it's not instinctively comfortable with.
Read http://www.cheerfuldogs.com/Documents/CheerfulDogs PositiveCERPuttingGoodIntoBad.pdf to find out more on how to put the "good" into something "bad". The art...
