Can you spot the cat? Stuck on a ledge on the eighth storey of Block 357, Tampines Street 33, this white cat was fortunate enough to be spotted by a concerned member of the public. Our Animal Rescue Officer rushed to the scene and got the frightened feline out of danger, bringing it back with him to our shelter. Fortunately, kitty is safe and did not suffer any injuries. We're advertising the cat on Straits Times Classifieds in hopes of its owner coming forward to claim it. If you are the own...

How A Dog's Name Is Used
30th Sep 2013, by SPCA Singapore

We often use our dog's name in a way that doesn't quite encourage it to respond - we use its name as a verbal reprimand when the dog has misbehaved; we repeat it over and over again, essentially teaching the dog to tune out our nagging voice. If we want to build a quick response and get our dog's undivided attention when we call their name, the dog's name must always be associated with something rewarding. Kang Nee, a certified professional dog trainer with a PhD in Zoology, works with us and t...

We collaborated with boon, the designer who created our wonderful Keeping A Dog video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnH9Q2rdlss), and are in the midst of producing a series of short clips meant for our outreach and education programmes in schools and for the public. Around 400 animals come into our shelter every month. Out of this number, close to 300 are pets who used to have homes. These pets are abandoned at our shelter, with their owners expecting us to find homes for animals that they t...

Adoption Spotlight: Nugget. At 2 years old, this pretty bunny is definitely a charmer! Nugget is as cute as a button, and will definitely melt your heart with her gorgeous looks. But she wants a family who knows what a rabbit needs, and understands the work that goes into maintaining her generous coat of fur. Like all rabbits, she'll need plenty of space to exercise and should not be kept in a cage the whole of her life. Bunnies should be allowed to roam the house! Or at the very least, in a ...

Only 5 weeks old, this boy has gone through his share of misfortune. Attacked by another stray dog and found covered with ants, this little puppy came to us in pretty bad shape. We tended to his injury and cleaned him up, but the little boy was too young and needed extra care. We turned to our bighearted fosters, and found a family willing to take him in. This little boy is now doing well under our foster's loving care! He's not ready for adoption yet and still has two more vaccinations to go,...

Adoption Spotlight: Donut, Melody and Raisin. These gorgeous 2 month old babies look exactly like each other, and they hang out together in our shelter. It sure can be challenging to tell them apart! They're really shy at the moment, but give them some time and they'll soon be bouncing off the walls with their kitten energy! These little babies are growing fast and won't stay small forever. Donut, the only boy of the lot, will grow up dashing; Melody and Raisin, the girls, are going to be ele...

Organized by Temasek Polytechnic, the Skills Certificate in Pet Care & Management (Companion Animals) course targets pet retail shop personnel and those working in the industry, with the aim of imparting skills and knowledge important for responsible animal care and welfare. This was a good opportunity for us to get the pet retail industry on our side. We wanted to help pet shop owners and staff understand that they play a vital role in educating potential pet owners who come to their stores. ...

While our typical canine family members bring us immeasurable happiness through play and companionship, some dogs provide invaluable service to humans by performing very demanding jobs for most of their lives. They work hard just like the rest of us. Guide dogs, one of the most well-known types of working dogs, are trained to know the difference between work and play, and help the visually impaired get around in the world. There is no room for typical dog fun while they are working because games...

In the lead up to the international World Animal Day, SMU PAW (the group who helped us organize our WAD2013's stage shows and competitions) is holding a cake auction! Instead of the usual sponge cake, cream and fancy food coloring (all of which should not be part of a canine's natural diet), this cake is actually a delicious meatloaf, made with premium meats and vegetables and topped with mashed potato. Stand a chance to walk away with this 3-tier cake sponsored by their wonderful partner,...

Adoption Spotlight: Princess Jodi (left) and Princess Toni (right). Princess Jodi, Princess Toni and Comet are siblings who came to our shelter together when they were only about 3 months old. Comet was lucky and got adopted soon after. Unfortunately for Princess Jodi and Princess Toni, they didn't have the same luck. Now 5 months old, these babies are growing up fast in our shelter, and we'd love for them to find their own homes. These lovely brindle puppies are super curious and can't wait ...

We received a call earlier this year in January, asking us to pick up a pet dog for euthanasia. When our Animal Rescue Officer arrived on the scene, he found that the dog had a huge maggot wound on its face. The dog was rushed back to our shelter for treatment and our inspector was alerted. We removed as many of the maggots as we could, and our consultant vet found that the surrounding tissue and bone structures were very badly damaged. Unfortunately, the damage was too severe and we could not s...

Quinn came to us with a horrible skin condition. Found wandering around East Coast Park, Quinn had lost most of her hair and her sensitive raw skin was left exposed. We advertised in the Straits Times and kept a look out for her owner, but they never came. Wanting a better environment for Quinn to recover in, we turned to our trusty fosterers. Sure enough, one of our fosterers quickly volunteered and took Quinn home with her. With medication that our consultant vet had prescribed for her skin...

Adoption Spotlight: Peanut (left) and Butter (right). Peanut is a 2-year-old boy who came to our shelter with his friend, Butter, a 2-year-old girl. Both British Shorthairs, Peanut and Butter hang out in our shelter; they're sure getting lots of attention from our volunteers. Butter is the shy girl who takes a while to warm up to people but give her a little time and she'll shower you with purrs. She'll probably be the one who stays out of trouble while Peanut explores to his heart's content....
