Teaching "Stay" 21st Oct 2013, by SPCA Singapore
Having trouble getting your dog to stay and not move until you tell him to? A good "Stay" is actually a two-part skill - "Stay" tells the dog not to move until you give it permission to do so, and a release word, e.g. "Free", signals that the dog has the permission to move. To build a good reliable stay, you need to work on the 3 variables that can make or break a stay - duration, distance and distractions.
Kang Nee, a certified professional dog trainer with a PhD in Zoology, works with us and...

These three ginger kittens (two pictured here) were brought into our shelter, after they were found by a concerned member of the public. Only one month old, these babies needed round-the-clock care. We turned to our trusty fosters and found a family who were willing to welcome all three babies into their home (and hearts).
These two boys and one girl are now home with our loving fosters! They're too young and not ready for adoption yet, but keep a look out for them in about two months on our...

Stuck on a ledge on the second storey of Block 301, Hougang Avenue 5, this cat was fortunate enough to be spotted by a concerned member of the public. Our Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) attended to the emergency call and managed to get the cat to safety after a bit of coaxing. Aside from frayed nerves, the cat was safe and eager to return to where it had come from. After ensuring its safety, our ARO released the cat to safety.

Adoption Spotlight: Viking.
This two-year-old boy may seem overly rambunctious and naughty, but that's only because shelter life is so boring for a happy young boy. Viking loves nothing more than regular walks and exercise, and has gotten along fantastic with our other dogs. Loving, sweet and incredibly affectionate, Viking has been in the shelter for too long! Come spend some time with him, and give a dog who may be your next best friend a chance.
*Not HDB approved.
Also, show some love ...

Teaching "Down" 14th Oct 2013, by SPCA Singapore
We may not think or know it, but a dog will lie down only when it's comfortable in a particular situation. If there are many distractions that the dog hasn't learnt to cope with present in the environment, it may be difficult to get your dog to lie down and stay down for long. Your dog may only lie down for a brief moment, then bob up again, unable to settle for some time.
Kang Nee, a certified professional dog trainer with a PhD in Zoology, works with us and the dogs in our shelter. Under her...

This tri-coloured cat was found by a concerned member of the public at the void deck of Block 551, Jurong West Street 42, with something tied around its neck. The finder soon realised that that something was rubber bands. The kind finder brought the cat to a vet immediately to get the rubber bands removed, and the vet found laceration marks around the cat's neck. This cat is now recovering at the vet clinic.
We are appealing for any information that may lead to the identification of the perso...

Inspired by the true story of a dog named Valli (one of our shelter dogs who recently managed to find a forever home), "Toby Wants A Home" targets children between the ages of four and twelve. The story follows a dog named Toby, from the time he arrives at our animal shelter to when he finally becomes part of a family he can call his own. We're hoping to share with our children an important message: Instead of purchasing a pet from a pet shop, adopt and give an animal a second chance in life.

This job is not for the faint-hearted. We received a call last Tuesday morning, reporting that a cat was found stuck in a four-storey high tree in Pasir Ris Town Park. Getting help from an NParks contractor, our Animal Rescue Officer managed to get to the cat on his second attempt. Fortunately, aside from rattled nerves, the cat was not hurt. We brought it back with us to our shelter and it has since been claimed by its owner.
Remember to keep your cat safe indoors! They're happy just explori...

Teaching "Sit" 7th Oct 2013, by SPCA Singapore
Every dog can sit, but they don't instinctively understand that the word "sit" means you want it to plop its butt down on the ground. Dogs need to be taught to understand our commands and should not be expected to know English from the get-go!
Kang Nee, a certified professional dog trainer with a PhD in Zoology, works with us and the dogs in our shelter. Under her Canine Education programme, she works with our volunteers and helps us train our dogs so they can better adapt to their environment....
